Title: Kovach responds to Wood
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From GRETEL C. KOVACH: I'm responding to the posting from James M. Wood regarding the story I wrote for Newsweek.com on the Mineola sex club case. Contrary to his assertion, I did in fact mention that the foster mother had apparently unduly influenced the children's outcries according to experts who evaluated the videotaped interviews. That information was presented in court and entered into public record, which I conveyed in the story along with quite a bit of other information that casts doubt on the state's case despite their three convictions (the fact that none of the alleged child sex act patrons have been apprehended, the testimony of numerous swingers who said they never saw children at the club, etc.) Although the story begins with Margie Cantrell's view, it is by no means an "uncritical" review of the case as Wood asserts. Rather, it is a look at a perplexing case from the varied perspectives of the central players, including one of Cantrell's biggest critics -- the defense lawyer. [Permalink]
