Title: Hoyt to stay on as Times public editor
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Memo to New York Times staffers

To the Staff:

The publisher and I recently agreed that we would extend Clark Hoyt's
term as public editor by one year -- until June, 2010. From the beginning
of this experiment in self-criticism, it's seemed to me that it would
benefit from a little longer tenure. Dan Okrent, because of an outstanding book contract, could only do it for 18 months. Barney Calame and then Clark signed up for two-year tours, but that has also felt too short. (At least to me. To the occupants of this thankless position, it may have seemed like eternity.) Because we have conceived this as a job for a Times outsider -- a fresh set of eyes -- it takes each public editor some months to get familiar with the people and the culture, to learn the beat. And then, before you know it, I'm engaged in another search for another public editor. Three years seems like a more reasonable tour of duty, and Clark has agreed to this one-time-only extension of his fixed term.

Anyone who reads his column and Web posts knows that Clark and I
often disagree. But his job is to be the reader's champion, not mine. He
has taken on big questions on behalf of our readers. He reports them
meticulously, weighs his information thoughtfully, and lays out his
conclusions in columns that are clear, intelligent and fair-minded, even if
they may make some of us wince. I'm glad he has agreed to continue in the job a little longer.

Best,
Bill [Keller]
