Title: IHT executive editor says it's time to move on
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

International Herald Tribune executive editor Walter Wells' note to friends and colleagues.

Folks,

At the end of 2002 when the conversations began about some temporary
transitional role for me at the IHT, I proposed a three- to six-month
commitment. (I also offered to do anything I could to help as The Times's full ownership took effect -- except to be editor of the Trib. But that's a story for another time.) The response was that The Times would probably want more time than that, but the talk was always in terms of months. Well, it will soon be six months plus two years since the initial conversation. And it has been a fabulous second chapter for me, filled with the kinds of opportunities and satisfaction that come too rarely in a lifetime. Now it's time to move on, both to the next phase of the IHT's transition, and to the post-IHT life that Patricia and I intended to start in 2001. Until the next executive editor is appointed, I'll be here and I'll be pushing ahead with everything we have underway -- big projects like the Asia newsroom, the magazine studies, performance management and remaking the features pages, and more routine ones like keeping the paper engaged and focused. Michael and I are still talking about when that next transition will take place, but the idea of summer in Provence is once again very appealing.

Onward,
W.
