Subject: Mike Oreskes Takes Over

Colleagues:

This morning Michael Golden, publisher of the IHT, announced to his staff
in Paris and Hong Kong that the Trib will have a new executive editor this
summer: Mike Oreskes. The news was already seeping out in enough places that we moved quickly to announce it first to the people who have most reason to be excited by it.

Mike will succeed Walter Wells, who had announced his intention to retire. He will work closely with our beloved Alison Smale, who will stay on as managing editor.

Praising Mike to you is preaching to the choir. Everyone at this paper
knows that Mike is one of the smartest, most competitive, most inventive
leaders in our ranks. Whether it is directing coverage of a huge story,
devising strategy for a new venture, nurturing talent or just assembling
tomorrow's front page, there's nobody better to have at your side. I'll
miss him.

But not really, because implicit in Mike's appointment is a commitment to
even closer collaboration between The Times and the Trib. So he and I will be talking regularly about our shared coverage plans, about the alignment of the two papers, and (he promises) about anything else where I can use his wise counsel and authority. Moreover, he will be back. The assignment in Paris is open-ended, but we all assume it will not be infinite and that when he returns he will return in a leadership role at The Times.

Mike and Jill and John and I are already working on the question of how we will distribute his portfolio, the increasingly crucial business of
spreading our journalistic excellence beyond the boundaries of the printed New York Times. Before long we expect to announce some restructuring to assure that our Internet and television ventures continue to thrive and grow. The precise timing of Mike's move is not yet set, but there will be time for toasting before our au revoirs.

Best, Bill
