How can we help crack journalism’s glass ceiling?

Barbara Selvin, assistant professor and internship coordinator at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism has been blogging recently about how the lack of women in newsrooms and newsroom management affects news content.

During this week’s chat, we talked with Selvin about her thoughts on the issue and about strategies that women and men can use to help crack journalism’s glass ceiling.

Selvin says lack of advancement and visibility are not just problems for women; they’re problems for the entire news industry — especially in terms of hiring a diverse staff and producing news reports that include a variety of sources. She argues that until newsrooms take consistent, positive action, the glass ceiling will likely remain where it is, and the stories that get told will remain predominantly male-sourced and male-focused.

    Interesting discussion. It’s funny that this chat talks about how to crack the glass ceiling because a lot of my writing influences have all been female figures. The only male writer I found remotely universal is Nicholas Kristoff … I think that the glass ceiling is more widespread in terms of careers. A lot of my peers and mentors are writers and have very robust careers. However, my peers who are female working in finance find their role challenging.  

    As far as news stories, I think there is a lack of reporting in this atmosphere where everything is coming from AP. I think magazines like Vanity Fair and the New Yorker have some of the most well thought out reports I would deem news.
