This is your reminder to get hustling on those summer internship applications and to get them out. It may seem early, but it isn’t really if you want to contend for the best.
Law firms hired next summer’s associates in September, if that gives you perspective about business practices outside of journalism.
Internship deadlines at most big newspapers fall between Nov. 1 and Dec. 1. These are coming up on Monday, Nov. 1:
- The Boston Globe
- The Denver Post
- Pulliam internships (The Arizona Republic and The Indianapolis Star)
- St. Petersburg Times
- The Washington Post
The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have Nov. 15 application deadlines.
So rather than run right up to the last minute, get your applications ready and out. You always can update them later. The work is inevitable; tackling it early just gives you more opportunities.
My sense, from e-mails I have received from recruiters and a slowdown in newsroom attrition, is that 2011 could have more opportunities than 2010 did. But many of the best opportunities will be closed in less than two weeks.
