Chat Replay: As a writer, how can I learn from criticism of my work?

I know writers who hate criticism of any kind. As a result, they hate being edited. Some such writers don’t want to violate deeply held principles of craft, and others are just jerks.

A good critic of your work can be hard to find. But here’s the good news: there are strategies for turning any kind of criticism, even the bad stuff, into useful choices. It isn’t easy. In fact, it is often painful, especially when the criticism is insensitive, uninformed, biased, unfair, insensitive, profane or all of those things combined.

In our chat, we discussed how to receive criticism, how to learn from it, and how to turn your pain into your story’s gain.
