Will Apple Tablet disconnect publishers from readers and revenue?

While media companies may have a lot to gain distributing their content on e-readers and other mobile devices, they also have something to lose: customer relations. Neither of the two major digital storefronts, Amazon.com and iTunes, provide customer data back to publishers. According to Next Media, a consortium of magazine publishers that hopes to open its own digital news stand, that is a problem. The New York Times quotes John Squires, interim managing director of the consortium, on the issue: “It’s fundamental to the business model of publishers … We’ve always enjoyed an opportunity to know exactly where our consumers are, and be able to market other products to them. It’s a very key issue for the founding members of this business.”
