Washington Post iPad app includes aggregation, social tools

Washington Post
The Washington Post’s iPad app is now available in the iTunes store.

Along with 11 categories of Post content, the app includes a “Live Topics” section that Monday morning highlights the Keith Olbermann political donations story, health care and President Barack Obama’s visit to India. Those pages include headlines and links to other news sources in addition to the Post’s. For the Olbermann story, for instance, the app links to CNN, Forbes and The New York Times.

At the bottom of each “Live Topic” page are streams of related comments from Twitter and Facebook. The app encourages users to connect their Twitter and Facebook accounts and retweet or comment.

Other features of the app include videos, photo galleries and a “read later” button for offline access to stories.

Users can access the app for free until Feb. 15, 2011, though they must register. After that, full access to the app will cost $.99 a month for print subscribers and $3.99 for others. The current complimentary subscription period is sponsored by ExxonMobil.
