Facebook surpassed Google last year as the most visited website in the country, according to Experian Hitwise. The social network accounted for almost 9 percent of U.S. website visits over the first 11 months of 2010.
Google.com, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo.com rounded out the top five most visited sites.
Variations on “Facebook” also comprised four of the top 10 most searched terms last year, accounting for 3.4 percent of overall searches.
Many media websites saw a significant rise in referral traffic from Facebook, and other social networks, in 2010. Last year, after integrating new social sharing tools into its website, The Washington Post reported a 280 percent increase in Facebook traffic.
Goldman Sachs recently invested in Facebook, valuing the company at $50 billion.
