Editors divided on whether technology has improved day-to-day news coverage in their markets

About 53 percent responding to ASNE’s survey said the focus on digital delivery and technology has improved coverage, while 33 percent said technology-related issues actually had hurt news coverage because they take time and effort away from core newsroom functions. The remainder say coverage has stayed about the same, reports Commercial Appeal editor Chris Peck, who chairs ASNE’s technology committee. || Read the survey results.

    Technology has been a godsend to producing news faster, to providing more context and to developing richer content. Unfortunately, efficiencies have been met with workforce reductions rather than powering a formidable newsgathering force. If we could have our old newsroom with the new technology, we’d be worth 5 times what we are charging for online access and for the print editions — and the advertising would cost more because of the audience gains we could fuel digitally. Instead, we are simply offsetting the staff losses with technology to help us tread water.
