Charlotte Observer drops plan to use government e-mail address lists

The paper wanted to use e-mail addresses it obtained from local municipalities to invite citizens’ input on news coverage, but the plan was widely criticized. “We apologize to all who were offended,” writes executive editor Rick Thames. “While we did not view these invitations as a ‘commercial use’ of the email lists, we respect the concerns of those who did.”
