Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s Matthew Doig wrote last month in his “best journalism-job want ad ever” that his investigative team dreams “that one day Walt Bogdanich will have to say: ‘I can’t believe the Sarasota Whatever-Tribune cost me my 20th Pulitzer.’” Well, that happened today. (“Walt sent me a note, effusive with praise,” says Doig. “The guy is a class act.”) Romenesko asked the editor if he ever filled the position.

He emails:
“I wound up getting roughly 75 applications from people in the business, including many with impressive resumes. And I got dozens more from people whose cover letter led off with, “I have absolutely no experience in journalism, but I loved the ad and want the job.” In all, I received more than 500 emails from applicants and well wishers.
“We haven’t hired anybody yet, and it might be a couple months before we get serious about bringing someone on board. We’re sifting through all the serious candidates now. I’m not inclined to make a big public fuss when we do make the hire, but I do like the idea of drawing attention to that person’s first big project.”
