Fred Thompson: Stop repeating the story about me in Gucci loafers at the Iowa fair

National Review
Earlier this week, Fred Thompson sought to dispel a story that in 2007, as he campaigned for president, he tooled around the Iowa State Fair in a golf cart as he wore Gucci shoes. Although he was whisked to an interview in a golf cart, he writes, he spent the day on his feet, which have never worn Guccis. Also this week, Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson told the story again, noting that the incident damaged Thompson’s campaign.

Thompson’s response:

“On top of the other embellishments already piled on what we now know was a journalistic fabrication, yet another writer is adding another falsehood — that the Iowa fair events which never really happened were responsible for seriously damaging a campaign. And they lazily repeat it over and over and over. Guess it beats working. Besides, there are never any consequences.”

Thompson predicts where the story will go:

“Four years from now, I fully expect to read about a 2007 trip to the Iowa State Fair where I was driven around in the back of a stretch Hummer with tinted windows while sporting mirrored sunglasses and a Moammar Qaddafi cape, and being fed grapes by a nubile campaign volunteer.”

Hey, welcome to the village. I like Fred’s response, but one wrong campaign story is nothing compared to the falsehoods perpetrated about Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

As compared to the one perpetrated about Sarah Palin? Remember all the stories about how the baby was not hers but was instead her daughters? That is still out there. And the one about how “she can see Russia from her house?” That is also still out there. Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama stories are mild compared to the ones Sarah endured as well as the ones pu out there by the Dems about W.

Cameron of FOX News makes the accusation in this 2007 video.

Spokesperson of Cultural Affairs and Director of Ancienttruthmedia.com writes:
My name is Thompson and I am wearing Wallmart sneakers with holes. I do not wear Gucci shoes or carry Gucci bags. I don’t mind if Senator Fred does. How silly the criticism if it had not been intended as a hurtful barb to a once promising political campaign. In the end, the big boys in politics need to laugh a little more and be thankful that worse cannot be said. Every time I see the former Senator acting in “a strong supporting role” for a Reverse Mortgage TV sales adv. I think of his aborted race for the nomination. My how life changes for all of us. Good health and long years to a fellow Thompson. As for his wardrobe, I wish him namebrand designer dreams and a pair of cheap comfort shoes from a local Walmart. Things could be worse.

So the absurd story about Obama being born in Kenya is “mild” compared to the one about Sarah saying she could see Russia from her house?

  • Anonymous

Certainly mild compared to the one that she was lying about being the
mother of Trig. Zero could have stopped that story in an instant and
yet 2 years later he still has not – and I am not a birther by any
means. And moving in next door to spy on Sarah as that one writer did
or all the other stories that were bandied about her is far worse. It
was so bad at one point that a supporter put up a website with just the
stories that were out there and the true facts behind them because there
were so many lies being promulgated. The total got o over 100 stories
and meanwhile Zero was not even really investigated by the media by
    comparison.
