Trump invitation is just one of the problems with WHCA Dinner

Washington Post
The Washington Post was critical of Donald Trump in its news and opinion pages on Thursday, but on Saturday the paper’s staff will be hanging out with Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. “Awkward though the Trump invitation is, it is just one of the many problems with the annual dinner and its satellite events,” writes Dana Milbank. He writes:

The correspondents’ association dinner was a minor annoyance for years, when it was a “nerd prom” for journalists and a few minor celebrities. But, as with so much else in this town, the event has spun out of control. Now, awash in lobbyist and corporate money, it is another display of Washington’s excesses.

“We know Trump has no class,” writes Bill Press, “but has the mighty Post no shame? Has the White House Correspondents’ Association no standards? || Politico’s Patrick Gavin interviews WHCA Dinner featured funnyman Seth Meyers, while colleague Amie Parnes posts the dinner guest list. || WP Reliable Source column asks: Will the president be funny at the dinner? || National Journal has 23 memorable moments from past dinners. || A story about the dinner from 20 years ago shows how little it’s changed.

> May 2010: Politico posted at least 84 stories about the dinner

Stick to the name: White House Correspondents’ Association and lose the celebs and the wannabes.

The Post has been sucking up to wingnuts and the GOP (adding Kristol, Theissen, Rubin; cheerleading the Iraq war, doing steno for Ken Starr) for years. This should be a wakeup call to them that it’s causing a problem. OTOH, I fully expect they won’t wake-up, given their other behavior in recent years.
