Of the seven New York Times assistant managing editors, Craig Whitney has “the greatest combination of intellect, breadth, culture, and quirky knowledge that in some ways exemplifies the Times,” says Kim Eisler. He predicts Whitney will be named executive editor and Washington bureau chief Jill Abramson (left) will be his managing editor. “Replacing an African-American managing editor with a woman would help deal with the problem some might have of having two white males again atop the masthead,” notes Eisler.
