Zite CEO on personalized browsing: ‘Discovery is really in its infancy’

In a story for Entrepreneur’s list of “100 Brilliant Companies,” Jenna Schnuer writes that the personalized news app Zite has the potential to provide users more information, more quickly, than search. “It’s a problem that consumers and, I even think, experts tend to underestimate because it is a ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ problem,” says Zite founder and CEO Ali Davar. “Discovery is really in its infancy. … You know there’s all this interesting information that’s out there, and yet you’re not getting it.” By the end of the summer, Zite will be available on other mobile devices and perhaps the Web. || Earlier: Zite incident shows why publishers need to enable automatic, controlled content distribution. || More media companies that made the list:

  • Instapaper, which enables people to save content from the Web to read later
  • Storify, a service that allows users to pull material from social media into a single story that they can embed on any page
  • Timetosignoff, a nightly email summarizing the day’s news (currently available for New York, Los Angeles and Chicago)
  • On Demand Books, which prints and binds paperback-quality books on demand
  • Pinterest, which enables users to create collections of things they find online on a virtual “pinboard”
