The Miami Herald apologizes for mistaken ad featuring Miami HEAT merchandise in Monday’s newspaper

MIAMI, FL – The Miami Herald has apologized to its readers for a Macy’s ad that appeared in some editions of Monday’s newspaper erroneously congratulating the Miami HEAT on becoming 2011 NBA champions.

The HEAT lost to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6 of the Finals.

“The Miami Herald deeply regrets the error,” said Alex Villoch, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Advertising. “We apologize for any inconvenience to our readers, and to Macy’s.”

The ad in the Sports section featured official Miami HEAT merchandise available at Macy’s. The ad had been prepared in advance and was intended for use after Game 7 in the event of a HEAT win.

What’s curious is that even if Miami had won the game, the series wouldn’t have been over yet. They would have played a game Tuesday to decide the championship.

Hmmm the ad wouldn’t have been accurate even if the Heat had one last night. Big oops!
