Apple: ‘You need a dirty mind to be an editor in this business’

The Visual Side of Journalism

That’s the observation of Charles Apple, who notes some sexually suggestive graphics and headlines that have slipped past editors. One of them is this recent weather graphic from USA Today:

“You need to have a dirty mind to be in the business of mass communications,” Apple writes. “Or, at the very least, you need someone with a dirty mind on your staff. Because you do not want to give the sixth grader in all of us this kind of viral amusement.” More examples in his post.

Wish we had MORE hidden porn in media. Then maybe there wouldn’t be so many uptight housewives that don’t want to give it up to their husbands

I don’t get it, what is so suggestive about a sun taking the cities temperature? And why must you convince me that there is something suggestive about it since I didn’t notice or care about it in the first place?

Oh yeah, a media that thrives on misery and death has a problem with the normal and natural comedy surrounding normal and natural sexual activity.

    Screw you media owner guys.

I think somebody who doesn’t recognize this as suggestive needs lots of therapy.

I’m actually glad that was published, for same reason I took a secret glee in seeing the headline “police find crack in man’s underpants” in my paper one Sunday a long time ago.

Porn is in the eye of the beholder. If someone thinks this is suggestive, they need lots of therapy.

What Apple says is exactly what we were taught in our editing class at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire more than 30 years ago.
