‘No sex, please, we’re Hoosiers’

Fox59.com | WRTV | NUVO
Indianapolis alt-weekly NUVO is getting some complaints for this week’s “Sex Indiana-style” [NSFW image] issue that includes a photo of Mr. Nude America. (Local TV news is all over the story, of course.) “I looked at the photo,” says NUVO web editor Laura McPhee, “and my thought was we’ve never censored the female body when we reproduce artwork and I didn’t see a need to censor it because it was a male.” She adds that the paper never received complaints when images of nude females were published. One unhappy Hoosier is Krystal Johnston, whose 10-year-old daughter saw the paper. “I don’t think it should be put out there for children to get a hold of,” says the mom.

Just to clarify, we ran three photos in this week’s issue of NUVO from the 2011 Kinsey Juried Art Show at The School of Fine Arts (SoFA) Gallery at Indiana University. One of those photos was of Mr. Nude America.  The issue included a feature on the exhibit, as well as several articles related to sexuality, sexual health, and nudity.  While this may not change the minds of those who thought we should not have run the photo, there are relevant facts most local media coverage omitted (surprise!).  Laura McPhee, NUVO

I have friends in Indianapolis, and I have read NUVO. It is a pure piece of trash ten times less professional than a Village Voice, full of foul language and tripe. And NUVO doesn’t pretend to be a Playboy. It pretends to be a news weekly. What it did was trashy and exposed children to things they shouldn’t be exposed to.
