NBC News and Interactive One plan to announce Monday an editorial and sales partnership for their news sites aimed at African-Americans: NBC’s TheGrio.com and Interactive One’s NewsOne. ”The looming election season of 2012 and the increase in niche Web sites and advertising to African-Americans and other minority groups helped to propel the alliance,” writes the Times’ Tanzina Vega. TheGrio.com will oversee the editorial side of the partnership — the sites will share content and enable their reporters to collaborate — and NewsOne will be in charge of ad sales. Vega notes that TheGrio’s audience, the larger of the two sites, tripled from May 2010 to May 2011, and NewsOne grew by about 67 percent.
