Chicago Tribune to print rival Sun-Times, 400 will lose jobs

With this agreement, the Sun-Times has effectively exited the printing and distribution business. The Tribune has distributed Sun-Times papers since 2007. The printing move will save the Sun-Times $10 million annually with 400 employees taken off the payroll. Pressroom personnel, paper handlers, electricians, machinists, drivers, and operating engineers will be among those dismissed. Sun-Times chairman Jeremy Halbreich tells his paper: “This has been a very, very difficult decision. But in my role, I have got to do things that keep our newspapers in business.”

    Talk to news execs some time, and ask them if they think the ban — which is needless — hurts them. Mnay of them will say yes — despite the claims by many that newspapers and TV are not related products.

    It’s a very unfortunate play for these 400 folks. Yet, a plus for others. I know this feeling all to well after being one of the last three employees to literally close the doors of the historic Rocky Mountain News in Denver.

    In the next 10 years Mr. Jeremy Halbreich should be ready to quit printing. Ad revenue going sharply down will force everyone to go online. Dismissing 400 people will only help him to save 10 million but it will not be enough. It has nothing to do with competition and Obama. The industry is changing. TV’s will do no help to newspapers.     This is a sad day for media competition in the nation’s third largest market and its second best news city.

    And I blame Obama and the whole FCC mentality. Isn’t it about time we got the federal government out of the media industry and allowed newspapers to at least own ONE-TWO local radio stations and ONE local TV station? The synergy might produce news profits and new marketing abilities, as well a better promotion of print stories — which, let’s face it, are the meat and potatoes of U.S. news.
