Chicago Tribune reporter is laid off, still shows up to represent paper on TV show

Business reporter Bruce Japsen was laid off on Thursday after 13 years at the Tribune, but still showed up at Chicago public TV studios later in the day to represent the paper for a week-in-review discussion. “I went on because I’m a pro, and I think those people are pros,” he says. “That’s what you’re supposed to do.” Last month the Tribune said it was going to hire more reporters for its “enhanced” product.

    OK, so there’s no way to say this without coming across as a jerk, so keep that in mind. But was this a layoff that was effective immediately? Because if it was, then Japsen had no business going on TV in the role of a Chicago Tribune reporter. If he got, say, two weeks notice, then that’s another thing entirely.
