Keller says decision to run photo of starving Somali child on NYT’s A1 ‘a no-brainer’

Huffington Post
Bill Keller tells Michael Calderone that top editors looked a half dozen of Tyler Hicks‘ photos, “all of them arresting.” Director of photography Michele McNally selected the photo of the child that’s on today’s front page — a pick that Keller says was “pretty much the consensus of the room.”

We realize, of course, that the story du jour is the debt vote — to which we devoted the lead story and upwards of four pages this morning — but there’s no reason that has to eclipse a human catastrophe in Africa. Readers can follow more than one important story at a time.

Jeffrey [Gettleman] and Tyler went to great trouble and some risk to get as close as they could to the calamity in Somalia. They sent us a harrowing story and vivid, arresting photographs. We put them before the attention of our readers. That’s our job.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://to.ly/aRG4

The picture was awful – and I wish my local newspaper had had the courage to run it on A1 instead of inside.
