Charge to be dropped against photojournalist arrested for videotaping police

Long Island Press
The Suffolk County Police Department plans to drop charges against a freelance news photographer arrested Friday for videotaping police. The Long Island Press reported that the police commissioner made the decision about an hour after the Press Club of Long Island protested the arrest. The police commissioner told the newspaper that officers will undergo media relations training. The photographer, Phil Datz, was videotaping the conclusion of a police chase when an officer told him to “go away,” although other members of the public were allowed to remain. When he resumed filming farther away, he was arrested and charged with obstruction. || Related: What to do when police tell you to stop taking photos, video (Poynter.org)

Instead of training for ‘media relations’ it should be ‘public relations’. Every member of the public, whether they be reporters, citizens, or even foreign tourists have the same right to record. Often media can get special access, which is fine since they are a known component, but in a public area everyone else has the same rights as they do. Why is no one reporting on the identity of this guy? This needs to be documented!

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://to.ly/aRG4

the cop who did it should lose at least two day’s vacay/sick leave. In a just world he would face criminal sanction.
