Miami Herald staffers debate posting of Palin-Rice tryst story

Random Pixels
Miami Herald Dolphins beat reporter Armando Salguero is unhappy with his paper’s decision to post a story about an alleged 1987 fling between Sarah Palin and former Miami Heat player Glen Rice when he was a college player and Palin a TV sports anchor in Alaska. Salguero told colleagues in an email:

Do we know this story to be TRUE? Are we certain it is TRUE because we’ve done the work or have a reasonable certainty that is TRUE?

Did anyone actually try to confirm this story before giving it Herald front page credibility? Did anyone call Glenn Rice to get independent confirmation? He lives in Miami, you know.

Is it now OK to repeat any “report” from the National Enquirer on the front page of the Herald’s website without actually reporting even one fact independently? The blog calls The Enquirer’s sources “solid.” …

If this Rice story, unconfirmed and unreported by us, can be published on our site, do the alien stories not meet the same standards?

Herald political reporter Marc Caputo responded a short time later:

To answer your question: I don’t think we “know” this story about Palin to be true. We do know it has been reported and it is a topic of political conversation. So we have displayed what we “know” so far. This is common in newsrooms. Even in your department, sports. …

I find it curious you didn’t raise this as a newsroom wide-issue at the time, but I digress somewhat.

I do think this is different from an alien story. Yes, it appears to be from/tied to the Enquirer, which also broke the John Edwards baby-story. I remember at the time that we posted this information as well. Edwards, as you know, is a Democrat.

I find it curious you didn’t raise this as a newsroom wide-issue at the time, but I digress somewhat.

> Wemple: I asked Blodget why he reported this rumor on Business Insider

Will conservative males vote for a former mudshark?

Stick a fork in Sarah – She’s done!

I think the point of the revelation about the tryst is to expose the Talibunny’s pre-political career posing as a TV journalist to stalk and seduce youngsters, an odd bit of personal history given her hyper-christian, dominionist views that god will nuke the world if someone smooches someone else without getting written permission from a preacher. Here she was, tongue lolling, hand aquiver on the microphone (and possibly stoned out of her mind on drugs) hunting for illicit liaisons with blithe and chaste (but not for long) young college athletes, some barely a few years out of their childhoods.

It’s true. They should have gone to Rice’s home and interviewed him and gotten every last detail on the record.

They they should have run it at length in the newspaper and website.

And then hired an exotic danger to perform an interpretive eroic dance while William Shatner read the Q and A allowed in iambic pentameter.

    Red Hot Sarah

There once was a news girl named Sarah
Whose loins were a burning caldera
‘Til a black guy named Rice
    Was able to advise
Her to let him hose off her Sahara.

Then Sarah grew fond of Glen’s juice,
But it certainly made her flower loose
So they went back and forth
    Until Sarah went north
And, true to form, started dating a moose!

    Later Sarah decided to marry
    Her sweetheart, who’s white ordinary
    Now “Once you go black,
    You never go back”
Is liable to give Todd his first coronary!

So Sarah, the political over achiever
Cooled off her hot Alaskan beaver
    But now we all know
That there’s more to her show
‘Cause this candidate once had Jungle Fever!

No, she doesn’t promote abstinence only.

I laughed until I almost peed my pants. How outrageous! (the author) I mean, we’re supposed to care about who Sarah slept with before her marriage? The book is cleverly worded. Does it actually say she slept with her husband’s business partner WHILE they were married? And if so, who cares? Jeeze. Talk about ancient history. I gotta admit I roared at the image of Sarah snorting cocaine off a 55 gallon drum! If anything, I liked Sarah a WHOLE lot more after these ‘revelations’ than before. My advice: Run with it, Sarah.

Caputo is justifying his bias. The Herald editors choose what winds up on the front page.  The only things that belong on the front page of a reputable newspaper are reports of reasonably verified factual information of strong public interest.  Not pure speculations, rumors and gossip.  Were lots of Globe / Enquirer stories in 2007 about many candidates suspect acts and behaviors.  Articles about Hillary.  Reports of Obamas drug use and gay sex encounters.  All kinds of shocking things were revealed by tabloids in 2007.  It is not permissible for the Herald to cherry-pick completely unverified stories, and present it in any manner as news.

Salguero is absolutely correct to call out the Herald … For using its front page to push an editorial agenda.  For violating the basic tenets of journalism.  For exploiting their readers by shamelessly attempting to shape public opinion, presenting anonymous, unverified, unsubstantiated gossip .. as news.

I read it as more like Edwards is a Democrat, so see how fair minded we are?  We do exposes on both sides.

Armando Salguero is right, if not for all the right reasons. I wouldn’t have published that story, even if I’d known it to be true. It’s unseemly and beneath the Herald’s lost dignity. I’m disappointed that Glen Rice confirmed it. It’s disappointing too that someone (apparently in Alaska) other than Palin and Rice knew about it, and blabbed.

this woman has kids – i don’t care for her politics and she kind of put herself in a bad place by being so judgmental BUT we don’t need to know this about them…yes, it caught my eye but i hate that kids have to read this and now deal with it at school

  • DorothyP

So she had sex with more men than Michele Bachmann and Hilary Clinton combined? Good for her.

Well, it seems he wants to know why this issue wasn’t raised in the newsroom and through email if this guy felt so strongly about it…

Apparently, Glen Rice confirms this in the book.

I find it curious that Mark Caputo is so irked at Armando Salguero, but I digress. Salguero is right. Caputo is wrong. This is ugly, potentially libelous stuff and it doesn’t belong in a reputable newspaper.

The Herald isn’t fit to line bird cages.  Shameful.  You have ZERO journalistic standards.  Repeating what was reported in The National Enquirer is now what you consider to be a reliable source?  Incredible.  You should all hang your heads in shame.

  • Anonymous

I think they were referring to the fact that it was the Enquirer that broke that true story.  They were trying to say that sometimes their (Enquirer) reporting is credible, not comparing Edwards affair to Palins one night stand. Please reread for intent…….

What is key here is that Palin promotes abstinence only and ridicules everything else.  That’s going to make people very interested in the details of her abstinence only life.  And it sounds like she might have been a doper too.

  • http://twitter.com/yestradamous yestraday

Oh for goddsakkes.  Comparing this to Edwards?  He was MARRIED at the time of his affair.  Otherwise who would care?
Serious bad, people.  Misogyny unmasked.  Who did Perry bonk before marriage?  Who did Obama bonk before marriage?   Who did you all bonk before marriage? Care to cough it up?
    I hate the media.
