Fox Sports apologizes on air for fabricating headlines

Earlier this month, Fox Sports flashed what it said were “actual headlines from the local papers in Chicago” about Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, including one that said he “lacks courage.” (You can see the three here.) A skeptical Chicago Tribune sports staff did some investigating and found that Fox’s “actual” headlines were in fact fabricated. Fox Sports’ Curt Menefee admitted that yesterday in an apology during yesterday’s pregame show. He told viewers:

Before we move on, I want to go back to Week 1, during the Atlanta-Chicago broadcast, when our production crew that was doing that game displayed an incorrect graphic. Now, the production team told our announcer Daryl Johnston that a taped video package that made air came from actual headlines concerning Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s performance during last year’s NFC Championship Game. While in fact, they were not. FOX Sports regrets this mistake and apologizes to Cutler, the Chicago Bears organization and everyone involved.

“Mistake”?? Yeah, while it was a mistake to make up the headlines, what they did was fabrication. Why couldn’t they have said, “We apologize for making stuff up”? “Mistake” makes it sound like somebody transposed a number or something.

Someone fabricates headlines and nobody’s fired?  It’s ok.  It’s Fox.  Just make it up.   The standards in every organization are set from the top.   It doesn’t appear nobody at the top got in trouble for this.
