Fox Newser Judith Miller took Poynter’s free online course titled “Covering Islam in America,” then graded it “mediocre.” She complains that “the implicit message” of the course is that the 3,000 9/11 deaths have been over-covered, and journalists should spend more time covering malaria, or hunger, or HIV/AIDS. Poynter defended the course in an email to FoxNews.com: “We believe there is a need to better understand the complexities of Muslim societies and the online course offered by Poynter and Washington State University is a vital resource toward that end. The values underpinning the course are truth, accuracy, independence, fairness, minimizing harm and context — the core journalistic values on which we build all our teaching here at Poynter.”
