Brown’s way of working, as described here, is pretty much the method, if that’s not too eccentric a word, of every great editor I have worked with. Journalism, even weekly journalism, is not an exact science, nor some polite quadrille; it’s a gut-feel frenzy, and the stronger for that.

This is the same problem Brown had at The New Yorker. She’d ripped the magazine apart at the last minute because she thought she had a more current story.
