CJR: Congress needs to change tax code to account for nonprofit news outlets

CJR
Although the press is worthy of mention in the Constitution, it’s not one of the types of organizations approved for nonprofit status in section 501(c)(3) of the tax code, Ryan Chittum writes. So nonprofit news sites have counted on the IRS recognizing their educational value. “What’s needed to ensure a stable future for nonprofit news is for Congress and the President to approve a new part of the 501(c) statute that specifically exempts non-commercial journalistic organizations.” Other organizations that seem less essential to the democratic process have been exempted: social and recreational clubs and cemetery companies. || Earlier: Nonprofit news orgs wait months longer than usual for IRS approval (Poynter.org)
