More LA Times newsroom cuts loom as editor exits

The Wrap
Lucas Shaw reports that 12 to 20 staffers could “be laid off sometime after the first of the year, according to one individual with knowledge of the situation. Deeper cuts may well follow after the final numbers for 2011 are in. … Budget cuts could also include eliminating or merging entire sections of the paper. On the block would be weekly feature sections such as the Travel, Home, Image, Food or Books.”

The paper announced Tuesday that Editor Russ Stanton would be stepping down. During Stanton’s nearly four years as editor, the newsroom went from a staff of 900 to about 550. Stanton, a 14-year veteran of the paper, became editor in 2008 when James O’Shea was forced out over disagreements with the Tribune Company about newsroom cuts. Previous editors Dean Baquet and John Carroll resigned for the same reason.

It’s a challenging place to be in a declining industry, still they have transitioned well to digital, although the margins aren’t the same I’m sure.
