‘Daily Show’ explains irony to editorial writer

The Daily Show
The Association of Opinion Journalists (the new name of the National Conference of Editorial Writers) has a project to restore civility to public discourse. Froma Harrop, the group’s president, explains how the project squares with her own comparison of the tea party to al-Qaida in a syndicated column. (To give credit where it’s due, The Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto pointed out the issue before “The Daily Show.”) || Related: Gail Collins wins Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award (Columnists.com)

My argument was that the column was not uncivil, and I suggest that Steve Myers familiarize himself with it  – http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/08/18/the_commentary_pages_are_no_tea_party_111001.html – rather than rely on the six-minute version on Comedy Central.

He also should note that at the time James Taranto was pointing fingers at me, the Tea Partiers were going after him for having called them “Hobbits.”  A diversionary tactic?  Possibly.

Froma, Steve was describing the segment on the “Daily Show,” in which you did (however satirically) explain how the project squares with your comparison of the tea party to al-Qaida. He was not attempting to describe your argument, which no doubt is more nuanced than the clip conveyed. –Julie

    No, it really isn’t, Julie.

Yeah because God knows it’s civil to call someone a terrorist because you disagree with them, right?  Your argument that “That wasn’t metaphorical, I truly believed that” is about as valid when using the inflammatory language you condemn as saying “I’m not insulting him by calling him a fucking moron because he is one!” (as a hypothetical example)

Face it; your calls for civility in light of your own tone ring hollow and Comedy Central nailed you for it.
