FishbowlDC’s Rothstein criticized for accusing female journalists of going for ‘the sexpot look’

FishbowlDC Editor Betsy Rothstein has spent the afternoon responding to readers who are criticizing her for a piece she wrote about female campaign and White House reporters who are using “provocative, sometimes sexy photographs of themselves for their Twitter accounts.” In the post, Rothstein quotes The Washingtonian’s Harry Jaffe as saying, “That’s what they have going for them.”

Not surprisingly, men and women are calling the column sexist. Here’s a look at how the conversation is playing out on Twitter, along with some background on the issue of women facing discrimination on social networks:

It is just a coincidence that the young gals covering the news all happen to be proudly hot. I am certain it is only the ugly old skanks who don’t get the jobs that complain. Just because our society rewards pretty young women and punishes the gals who are not young, who are ugly, or who, God forbid!, cannot keep the weight off, doesn’t mean these gals are not doing a bang up job.

We have the best press corps ever, and the prettiest, youngest, and the most sex positive feminist ever. Keep the pix coming gals!!!

There ought to be a way to keep ugly people from embarrassing themselves by trying to become writers.

I agree with FishBowl writer here, 10000 percent. Right on, Betsy, You are right to bring this up and stick to your guns. People are in denial. Sigh
