Sports Illustrated is not gonna sell a lot of copies in St. Louis

Riverfront Times
Note: The original version of this post suffered from the author’s East Coast-centrism, causing him to confuse the St. Louis Cardinals with the Cincinnati Reds. I’ve revised the joke but preserved the original post below so fans in both cities have enough material to make fun of me. Insults to abeaujon@poynter.org, please.

The Sports Illustrated cover jinx is going to be a popular item of discussion among St. Louis Cardinals fans; as the magazine not only picked the Cardinals to finish second in their division but also features Albert Pujols — who ripped out St. Louis’ collective heart, pulped it in a blender and added it to a refreshing smoothie — on the cover, wearing a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim cap. Sports Illustrated picks the Angels to win the World Series.

(original item)

On one hand, Sports Illustrated picks the St. Louis Cardinals to win its division in its new baseball preview. On the other, it features Albert Pujols — who ripped out St. Louis’ collective heart, pulped it in a blender and added it to a refreshing smoothie — on the cover, wearing a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim cap. Sports Illustrated picks the Angels to win the World Series.

LOL! Ruined joke. Welcome to MY life, Andrew. All you need, really, is a copy editor. The line forms behind me, though: I need one worse than you do.

Well there goes that joke. Thanks for correcting that, Chris; I’ve updated the piece, or what’s left of it!

That link says SI picks the Reds to win the NL Central, not the Cardinals.
