Roger Ailes tells journalism students: ‘I think you ought to change your major’

The Herald-Sun | News14 | Daily Tar Heel
The Fox News Chairman and CEO spoke to about 350 people, including young journalists, Thursday as part of a special lecture series at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He started by telling them to change majors, which, Melody Butts reports, “elicited at least a few eye rolls.” Here’s what else he said:

  • “If you’re going into journalism if you care, then you’re going into the wrong profession … I usually ask (journalists) if they want to change the world in the way it wants to be changed.”
  • “Democracy depends on freedom of the press. But freedom depends on fairness in the press. There has to be more than one point of view.”
  • “Remember, the last time all of us got lined up together, we were lined up by two guys – Hitler and Stalin. If there’s an alternative point of view, don’t wet your pants. … Suck it up and say, ‘Hey, there’s room for everything.’ “
  • “We’re the only news organization who has not had layoffs because of economic conditions. Why? Because we win.”
  • His strength: “I pick good people … although some people point out that most of them are blond … when women get into television, they dye their hair blond.”
  • On Jon Stewart: “I don’t think he could make a living without Fox News. I think he likes Fox.”
  • On Newt: “Newt is trying to get a job at CNN because he knows he can’t come back to Fox News.”
  • On the Fox News mole: “The mole shows a culture that believes in theft, a lack of loyalty, turning on his colleagues, lying to management, and there are some real, ethical, serious questions about it.”

UNC J-school publication Reesenews.org had hoped to livestream Ailes’ talk but was denied permission. During the Q&A following his talk, Ailes said he rejected the request because “I just don’t know who they are.” The talk was live tweeted by UNC senior Sara Gregory and by New York magazine’s Gabriel Sherman, who is writing a book on Ailes.

Wait a minute… the head of Fox News is talking about “fairness” in the press?  What’s wrong with this picture?

     Huh?

Journalism schools teach the practice of Groupthink, as if it were a good thing, when it definitely is not and is actually harmful.
Modern lock-step journalists will bring on a new world order run by the elite for the elite, and too bad if you are not allowed admission to that in-crowd. George Orwell’s 1984 is still a chilling read, never going out of print so far.

The election of Barack Obama did one good thing. It flushed all the libeals in the media out of the bushes. Like a flock of pidgeons. The sky was blacked out.

  • Anonymous

They are all biased. They all have an agenda. They all sit around the news room first thing every morning and “conspire” to contain news they think the people don’t need to know and promote the news that they think is important (at least to them). Unbiased journalism doesn’t exist.

  • Anonymous

There is a reason that the media leans to the left naturally. LIberals are basically malcontents who simply don’t like the statis quo. Conservitives believe in “freedom for all”, Liberals believe in a “free for all”. Liberal journalists (a redundancy) throw shit on a wall and see what sticks and if it sticks, they smear it around. Conservatives like things to stay the same so that they can plan, but that doesn’t generate news. Liberals want to change everything all the time. Discipline is anamatha to them. Compare the Tea party to the Occupy movement and the medias coddling of one and criticism of the other.

The status quo doesn’t sell newspapers or get them face time on the TV. Getting read or seen is the road to big fat checks and as usual just follow the money. They all want the senior anchor position and the money and power it brings and chaos gets them that. Journalists are as venal any body else.

It would have been beneficial to see the quotes in context.

The main stream press sadly does need a huge injection of ideological diversity. Right now most of those going into journalism lean solidly to the Left.

The election of Barack Obama is one prime example of where journalist did not even try to pretend there were any professional standards; they simply became wholesale groupies for their back JFK hopeful.

as seriously as a yahoo that spells taken as “tanken”?

must suck being a closed minded liberal, with a head full of concrete.. “MUST KEEP OTHER …THOUGHTS OUT”… aaarargggghhhh….. the supposedly tolerant, are the worst kind of closed minded bigots.. not one in 50 liberals here spouting off about FOX have ever even watched it…

but you’ll repeat smears put out by left wing agenda groups without questioning why they think offering different opinions, is bad.. the only time liberals LOVE dissent, is when they are doing it,.. every one else who differs from them is unAmerican.. and they’ll tell you that straight up..

Every liberal arts major should read this, including journalism majors, before they blow a ton of their parents money on such worthless degrees:

Just glad to see somebody in the industry being truthful.  Though, no doubt the children will complain.

David Ike may be mostly nuts but he is right about one thing.  There aren’t objective journalist, just people who regurgitate the facts from a source which is usually the government.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BFLEMNHWI6FJUDYIRY4K53W3KU Mark

Ailes comments are spot-on. He demonstrates the tough-minded pragmatism, tempered with principle, that has been lost in the rest of the news media. Rather than rolling their eyes, the student journalists should be paying attention…and probably changing their major.

Yeah, right!!  Like THEY KNOW things he doesn’t about journalism.  Snort!!

You’ve just offered a warmed-over 60′s nostrum about kids lacking education and experience schooling their parents.

Well, the lefties who said those things are now running things….running things straight into the ground.

     Dan, really, at ease!

The more you indulge yourself in what you think is truthful observation, the more you reveal your shallowness and that you don’t have much of value to say.

By the way, it appears you’ve promoted yourself to site proof-reader and copy editor.

    So be it.

But, please, some people do misspell a lot of words. Sometimes that does come from tapping the keys passionately.

Regardless, with your remarks, I’d bet you’ve never made any errors.

Something else: Being too enamored of actual or purported pieces of parchment can be very dangerous and misleading, as we see with the current president and his advisers, as well as department secretaries.

And, FWIW, yes, “libtard” bothers me.

Just as, from the Democrat/progressive/liberal/leftist tribe, putdowns as you’ve made; intellectual puffery;  employment of ad hominems because there’s nothing of value that can be offered; constant use of “idiot,” “moron,” “redneck,” hillbilly,” “droolers,” “knuckledraggers,” “repuglicans,” “repugs,” etc. to denigrate respondents about whom you (singularly and collectively) know nothing; and similar insults and attitudes.

I was leaning towards Newt, I remember his contract with America and the success it had. And I read his books. A great idea man, however, he couldn’t stay focused when speaking to the press. I hope Mitt learned lessons from where Newt screwed up with the press. For conservatives it is mine field just talking to the liberal press so we need a candidate that manipulates the liberal press not feed it material to keep the issues off the table. Also Newt, unfortunately, is on the CNN staff. I won’t see him but for maybe twice a year. I don’t bother with CNN for my TV news. However, I hope Newt can still become part of the team that will turn America around and get people back to work and get this debt paid down.

All news is slanted when a commonality of viewpoint is carried by an allegiance and alliance of owners who are all of the same Zionist background. There are no other owners of the major news organs than these few wealthy zionists, who’re working hand in glove with the major bankster financial cartels that are controlled and run by other zionists. They pick their puppet to support and totally back them, when no longer needed they discard them for another, one puppet to them, being the same as the other completely controllable. The reason a Ron Paul is completely ignored as if he doesn’t exist at all, even when he wins, is because he wants to end the zionist FED, and that’s a no, no. This body of controllers has been in existence now for the last century, and so embedded themselves in control, that no one stands a chance of rocking their boat, but please be reminded that even as unsinkable as the Titanic was it sunk. These news media moguls know one thing right now, that the World Wide Web, is outside of their control, and that’s why they are trying to move in on it and control it if not through purchase, through sanctions and government puppets controlling it on their say so. This can not be allowed to happen ever or else all forms and forums of freedom and free form discussion on this planet and within nations will cease to exist. The war for the controlling powers of the www are underway with a fury and even at this very moment we are in danger of losing our voice. These New World Order Zionists must be stopped with everything we have within our power. They were responsible for our historical world wars and aiding and abetting those puppet dictators that started them, on their behalf.

U.S. journalists have a well-earned reputation for not being truthful.  The primary reason for that characteristic is the educational institutions from which they graduate, and the predominant agenda of the news outlets that hire them.  Journalistic ethics has become an oxymoron in America.  I agree with those who say that the internet is the main anti-dote to these circumstances.  It takes effort though to take the anti-dote and most Americans have been sleeping instead.

I live most of my life on the road in foreign countries. I have lived, have seen the squalor Euro-Socialist and Communist regimes have wrought.

FOX is a news agency that reports two sides of the stories they report (the competitors don’t very often). Their opinion shows are right leaning. Don’t confuse the two.

There is journalism in America, and after decades of media monopoly from the Left, there is finally competition.

Let the Euros and UN take care of Syria, we have a Communist to defeat… and if we don’t, we’re screwed beyond what most Americans can imagine. Obama, as he let us know through his message to Putin, is ready to screw us in every orifice he can. He’s filled a few holes already, but that is nothing compared to what he has in store for us.

There’s been a war on journalism ever since Watergate. What should have been its finest hour led to distrust of the industry that exposed criminal acitviity in the White House. Conservatives never forgave the “liberal media” for revealing Nixon’s misdeeds.

Fox News is the Right’s instrument of vengance against the MSM. Today we have a news network that mocks ethics, fact-finding and research, and other news networks that play by the rules. Only at Fox News would you see a report that LA was spending a billion dollars to equip its police force with 10,000 jetpacks, a story lifted from the Weekly World News. I kid you not: Someone at FNC thought the silliest supermarket tabloid ever was a credible source.

The good news is only about 2 million people ever watch Fox News at one time, and many of those are probably watching just for the entertainment value. Tens of millions more get their news from other, more legit sources.

It’s truly unfortunate that Fox News doesn’t have a competitor – a conservative-leaning network that sticks to facts and doesn’t have to resort to half-truths, misinformation and outright falsehoods to further its GOP agenda like Fox News does. George Will, are you listening?

  • Deborah Soutar

Journalists- people whose job it is to report the facts, not make the news, spin the news or rewrite the news.  It is not their job to change the world.  It is their job to give people the facts so that they are educated on them to make the right choices.

Today we have divided country in large part due to the betrayal of integrity to political ideology.  People do not trust news outlet to give them the “real” story without bias, prejudice and out and out lies.  Politicians are not vetted, investigated and proven unless they don’t ascribe to the reporter/editors/publisher personal/political agenda.

What happened to Ann Romney never would have happened if they hadn’t first savaged Sarah Palin.  Like her or hate her, her family especially her young children should never have even been mentioned in the press except to identify them. The unbelievable press coverage of Elizabeth Edwards and her children as well as other high profile people goes to show the depravity that has crept into the media and created the circus we now find ourselves in.

So for once I agree with Ailes. As usual we disagree on the why.  That’s a comfort to me.

  • Anonymous

James, you’re getting riled up and are now engaged in “argument by name-calling.” Calm Down. Booky has nothing of importance to say, but let’s try to convince him.

I would prefer to ask Booky why he thinks this point about Fox hiring former candidates is of any significance in the grand scheme of things. Yes, Fox News had Gingrich as a frequent guest, and gave Huckabee and Palin gigs. So what? Is Booky arguing that a former governor or a former Speaker of the House cannot provide expert commentary?
What point, pray tell, does Booky think he is making?

Is it so horrifying to Booky that conservative ideas get a platform?

MSNBC gave Al Sharpton a gig.  The fundamental issue here is bias in the press. MSNBC runs 4 shows in a row without a single Republican guest. They do it all the time. Meet the Press has a round table discussion every show, and it is ALWAYS dominated by Democrats from the NY Times, Washington Post, etc.

NBC and CNN just got caught doctoring the evidence in the Trayvon Martin case. CBS got caught manufacturing evidence in the 2004 election cycle.

When someone is a private citizen, Fox has every right to give them a gig, Booky. Why would you question that?

The AP controls about 90% of what the public learns about in their local paper.  This isn’t reporting, it’s propaganda central.  The AP reporters who cover Congress and the White House exert more direct influence over the country than Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court together.  They only report on things that their bosses want reported on.  That’s why Obama’s background was never exposed to the public. If you want someone to blame for the current state of affairs, look to the AP’s board of directors. (Even the editors are just corporate employees keeping their bosses happy.)

It should be a training of the critical thought processes to collect information and winnow out the chaff, putting the true facts out there, hopefully in a well-written manner.

”I usually ask (journalists) if they want to change the world in the way it wants to be changed.”

Journalists are not supposed to change the world, they are supposed to report the facts of whatever story they are covering.  When they start trying to change the world, they become activists, and the journalistic principles go out the window, as is proven by the MSM’s worship of everything anti-American, and ant-Capitalism.

The concept that journalism was about the truth, about the accurate transmission of information and unbiased analysis, died when radical leftist baby boomers used the concept of “advocacy journalism” to subvert the profession, dominate journalism (and other) academia in political correctness, and focus on their point of view winning whether supported by reality or not. Ailes has made a brilliant success of Fox by putting on multiple points of view, by surfacing data ignored by the failing bankrupt Mainstream Media. The death of so many jobs for leftists journalists is an ironic reward for their fealty to advocacy journalism, lies and their abdication of a commitment to truth.

Right, it sounded like the perfect allegory for journalists considering going to MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN. CNN recently lost 50% of it’s viewers. MSNBC gained 13%, but still rank 25-37 in ratings. NBC has seen a plunge in viewers in the last year alone.

It’s all connected to the clearly liberal bias reporting. A study in 2009 showed that over 80% of journalists in mainstream media voted for Obama, and I’m sure in 2013, we’ll see they attempted to re-elect him in vote and reporting.

If I were studying journalism and knew someone who could invest a little money, I would consider pooling for a new network. Glenn Beck TV would be nice to see next to Fox News and CNN. I’m also thinking of RT who has been gaining more attenting since people are looking for alternatives.

I live in the heart of Woodstock Nation. Every day, especially in our local newspaper, I see evidence of blind naiveté combined with arrogance. It starts in the schools where factoids are taught as history. Every kid learns about the McCarthy Era witch hunts – fair enough -  but nothing about the Soviets takeover of eastern Europe after WWII or the worldwide emergence of the Leninist/Marxist regimes that made the Red Scare possible. It is an article of faith among most “educators”, “jounalists” and Artsy types that if something is no longer a threat… it never was a threat. Academia is filled with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg apologists… even now, after there is evidence from declassified Soviet documents that they were guilty of espionage. Yes. You are right. They all need to study abroad in Dictatorships of the Proletariat.

FOX is owned by Saudis, and they won’t touch Sheriff Arpaio’s investigators’ finding of probable cause for forgery on Obama’s birth certificate and selective service registration, nor will they cover his failure of article II…i.e. FOX can be bought, to not cover the biggest scandal in US history.

  • storminnorman

one of the things I learned the hard way in university is that there is no room for dissent; with institutional power on their side, with numbers on their side, with the fact you need them more than they need you on their side….all of these things conspire to make young kids end up becoming leftist mush. Post-secondary education is one of only two industries I can think of (the other is mainstream journalism) where the consumer is treated with absolute contempt; they’re doing YOU a favour by indoctrinating you. I guess the saturation point for me came back around 1997 or 1998 when a feminazi professor (white female) was bashing universities for not hiring enough (white) females – and then I happened to look around and discovered that most of the new hires in the social sciences were women – a disproportionate number of whom were white women. That same year, I listened to a lesbian professor rail against the engineering department for not hiring enough female faculty – at the same time as she was an adjunct professor in the feminist studies department (which, in 1998, had not a single male professor or a single woman of colour on its roster). The hypocrisy of these people is boundless.

Fox thrives because it is the only news organization offering a respite from the garbage peddled everywhere else on american television; basically, all of the other major networks are left of center, in the tank for the democrats, suffused with political correctness, and “progressive” in orientation. The irony of it all is that, if these other networks were more honest and less biased, there would be far less demand for Fox News and its ratings would crumble.

fox news is part of the MSM now. They just have a different agenda. If you really want to know what is happening in the world , and the US for that matter, start reading foreign press…everything from al jazeera to the Jerusalem times, and european, south american, african , and asian newspapers.  Our press, including fox, doesn’t tell us about anything outside the 50 states. And they all now focus on insignificant ratings stories rather than tell us what is going on in Sudan, or inside the Syrian resistance, or any international imporatant stories. There is no jopurnalism in america anymore, and that includes fox.

I used to watch CNN and MSNBC for years; I never watch Fox News, but something happened that made me completely abandon CNN and MSNBC. This happened in  2008, I was watching MSNBC, it was Contessa making a report about a man in Phoenix, Arizona with a high powered rifle slung on his shoulder. Contessa said, the man was racist, he hates Obama (Obama was there to deliver his campaign speech). MSNBC showed the video, all I saw was back of the person no hands or face visible, the video MSNBC had shown was only up to his knee. I thought right away, it was wrong, the guy must be white. It became the talk of every Democrat (I’m a Democrat), I went to youtube start doing search about this “racist man” with high powered rifle at Obama’s campaign rally in Arizona.

When I saw the video, totally uncut, showing face of the man; I saw a very well dressed fine black man. I was very angry, why MSNBC lied to their audience like me. I’ve begun to switched channel comparing CNN, MSNBC and Fox News; much to my surprise it was Fox News reporting news as is. I quit watching CNN and MSNBC altogether.

Fox News was bedeviled by liberals, calling it fake news; based on my experience as long time viewer of MSNBC & CNN, I know who delivers fake news, it is MSNBC and CNN.

I’m not alone in abandoning this two networks, there are hundreds of thousands of us Democrats who can still think for ourselves, doesn’t believe in political correctness, are now regular viewers of Fox News.

My habit, since I was small, is to read as much news and opinion as I possibly can.

From every possible source; from mainstream to alternative to “out there”.

I am consistently disappointed with the caliber of journalistic writing, herd mentality, reflexive ideological bent(s), and just plain lack of honesty.

For an industry specifically protected in the very First Amendment to our once-honored Constitution, made up of citizens who are required to take no oath and need no government license, it is a failure.

Without honest reporting and commentary, the People are denied the facts needed make informed choices, and thus cannot give informed consent to the government’s actions.

Thank GOD for the Internet, where I can do my OWN research, often from original sources, draw my own inferences, and speak directly to other individuals who seek NEWS that effects us ALL.

BEWARE! The MSM, as with almost ALL institutions that hold power in America, has been co-opted, corrupted and is run almost entirely by the exact WRONG people.

If we are not careful, bold, industrious and coordinated, we stand to lose our LIBERTY.

Mr. Ailes had a good idea when he started Fox News Cable, however he is losing credibility fast and furiously.  Maybe he is not involved in the hiring of employees but someone is making one PC mistake after another.  The latest being a daughter of HiJackson.  Where has the fair and balance gone I ask? Ailes isn’t the first person to give Journalism schools a thumbs down. 15 years or so ago, TV journalist and producer Linda Ellerbee said J-schools, especially Broadcast J-schools, are the worst place to go if you want to be a good journalist. She told students to stay away from those courses and take a wide range of Liberal Arts courses instead. Take government, public affairs, economics, literature, and all the history courses you can cram into a schedule.

She said you will come out with a deeper understanding of what’s going on and why the world is the way it is. Broadcast Journalism schools are a total waste of time. They only teach you how to look perky in front of a camera. But if you can prove to a TV news director that you’re a good observer and a good writer, he or she can teach you everything you need to know about TV news in 30 minutes.

Is it a problem that Fox is a very successful news channel & attracts a certain type of host, pundit, contributor, etc?  Perhaps those people did not find the same type of attractive offer at another network & yes other networks do have conservatives politicians, etc.   Most everyone with a small amount of common sense can tell that Fox bends to the right but the real problem is that when other networks bend to the left they and their viewers won’t admit that.  MSNBC hosts like to tout that they are down the middle when they are not.  People like to tell Fox viewers to stop listening to Fox & get some real info elsewhere, however that’s pretty hypocritical when they do the exact same thing with their preferred channel.  BTW – how objective do you think the journalists who went to work for the Obama Administration really where when they were reporting stories on the other party & even Obama himself?

The big deal is – I can live with other views on TV even if I don’t agree with them.  I’m certainly not going to boycott their advertisers.  It’s those people with a lack of “tolerance” who are unable to accept other political views on TV & radio.

    Henry,

You’re right. The American media has been “leftist” for decades. But did you ever ask yourself, why?

Was it just a natural evolution of ideas? They naturally came around to seeing the light?

No. The legacy media’s slavish adherence to the party line of Politically Correct Progressivism (PC-Prog) is not natural or normal. They were converted in an ingeniuos covert influence operation run by Lenin’s good friend and master of influence operations, Willi Muenzenberg, a German KGB officer.

Muenzenberg, using Comintern cover, organized and implemented
the message, the attitude, and the dissemination of the message that became
PC-Prog, beginning in the early 1920′s. He conceived of a simple, direct and
powerful marketing message that was at the core of his influence operation:
“America is a racist, sexist, foreigner-hating, capitalist hell-hole that
    must be changed.”

Willi then combined that payload with an attitude that his
operators perfected in their numerous front organizations: “We are caring,
kind, considerate, intelligent, humane, and civilzed humans. You normal people
are all hating racist, sexist, xenophobic worms unworthy of living.”

Combining the payload message with the attitude, fermented
for 80 years, and you have PC-Progs today. Directly from the mind of Lenin, via
the genius of Muenzenberg, and the operational skill of case officers like
Andre Simon, Alex Gumberg, Nucia Perlmutter Lodge. The most successful
espionage operation of all time. Slow motion, and much more slowly than the KGB
envisioned, but powerful and successful nonetheless.

The goal of the op was to destroy normal American society,
    values, and culture.

The targets of the op were the transmission belts of
American culture: education/academia; the media; and Hollywood.

Muenzenberg’s case officers targeted and recruited or
co-opted Americans in each of these target domains.
Alex Gumberg recruited and ran the first media Willing Accomplice, John Reed (subject of Warren Beatty’s adoring movie, Reds). Gumberg ran all three of the journalists who provided on-scene reporting of the Russian Revolution to the US. Their reporting was completely pro-Bolshevik.
A few years later, other KGB officers recruited and ran the NY Times’ Man in Moscow, Walter Duranty. Duranty’s reporting was the beginning of the post-normal-American media. He was a slimy weasel who the KGB supplied with drugs, young girls, luxury items and his main motivator–fame and respect.
    These
Willing Accomplices in the destruction of America, reveled in the aura of the
specialness of being all-caring and uber-intelligent. In each of these domains,
the attitude grew like a cancer. By the 1960s, the traditional American point
of view in the media was drastically weakened. Today, the
traditional American point of view in the media is destroyed. All due to Muenzenberg
    and his Willing Accomplices.

Full details are in my book: Willing Accomplices: How KGB
covert influence agents created Political Correctness, Obama’s

Ailes is right but not for the reasons he stated. Modern media gives power of the press to everyone. If you care enough about something you can report it yourself. If others care as well your reporting can go viral. With Fox News being the most successful news outlet…there really is a market for More FAIR and Balanced reporting.  When Mike Wallace passed away this past week, I thought of the kinds of interviews he did over the years, and how great it would have been if he had done THE interview with the president before he was elected in 08!  I wish he could have asked him the really hard questions, such as, why did he believe he was qualified to BE President!  Sad to say, he May have…but I quit watching 60 mins. years ago because of their nasty Left wing slant.

You need to study more.  What is CNN?  MSNBC?  They are certainly government-dominated propagandist organizations.

Current journalists by and large are small, narrow dimensioned people who can only see one side.  They are this way because 1) they are intellectually lazy, and 2) they are cowards.  They spew government propaganda only.

If people could have the opportunity to communicate truth and wisdom, yet not have their face on TV or name in the by-line and be famous in the process (but yet get paid OK), would they still do it? Chances are, most of them would head out the door for something else.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.  There have, however been times when fact checking on what liberal sites, I have found them to be right.  Also, when fact checking on conservative sites, I have found them to be wrong which is why I advocate watching both, doing some digging and then making up my mind.

“If you’re going into journalism if you care, then you’re going into the
wrong profession … I usually ask (journalists) if they want to change
the world in the way it wants to be changed.”

That quote is great. Journalist should not be in their field to “change tthe world” they should be to as unbiasly as possible report the news. Unfortunately many modern “journalists” where brought up into believing they should be using their field as some sort of activist pulpit.

I always juggled throughout my childhood what I wanted to be. It was going to be one of three professions: Supreme Court Justice, Super-ethical journalist, or extremely caring University Professor.

By senior year of high school, I had held 13 Editors positions, and became editor-in-chief of the newspaper, mainly from my moving coverage of the beginning of Iraq War. Well, there is too much politics in journalism-even in high school- so, I figured if I was going to be involved in “politics” I should be a full-blown participant.

So, for my undergrad I went pre-law, Constitutional Law emphasized, with a double major in politics and religion. I started the first-ever Mock Trial team at my school, and we placed first, Nationally. I went through all of school, until I had to argue for the Government in Sunshine Act, and I realized the truth about the kind of person I was going to become. I took a few years off, boy am I glad.

So, after college, I was lost! Four years working toward Law School without anything to show for it; no, seriously, my major and path started my freshman year, and the only anomaly was my full-time job as a teller throughout school.

So, when I went to work at a State’s flagship University, I thought that I would eventually become a full Professor after going to Grad School. That didn’t work out, either.

The truth is, I should have gone to Culinary School and took a couple years to decide what I really wanted.

The lesson: You never, ever know until you try. Don’t try for something you know is wrong for you, even If others tell you it’s right.

I have a lot of friends in the Fine Arts dept.( They are more fun to drink with), and I am dumbfounded by some of the stuff they say. You are right, the individuality that they so love here, does not exist in any of the “workers’ paradises” that they endlessly praise.
I would like to start a study abroad program for the departments that are almost exclusively leftist, but have agreements only with countries such as China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran etc. and see if they can survive a semester without being expelled or arrested.

I resent that, even though it’s true! Besides, there are enough Marxists in Fine Arts!  With a BFA, and having worked in the arts for many years, I can tell you artists only embrace marxism  because it’s, like, cool. Democracy and capitalism or so “retro”, you know. Never mind that the First and Fifth Amendments which assert the rights of the individual in society do not and never will exist in any Red regime. (A lot of artists are too dumb to make that connection, but, hey, they’re artists. They can’t make the connection between individual rights and self-expression) A lot of my profs were pink!  Unfortunately, a lot of the people I’m surrounded by are their legacy. They say stupid leftist @#!!* and just assume I must agree with them.

Journalists??? Here in America??? Not a chance in hell. No, what we have is a bunch of Democrat bun kissers that have their lips firmly attached to Obama’s and every other Democrats posterior. They remind one of those yappy lap dogs that snap and bite anything that comes near their master. We haven’t had real Journalism in this country for over fifty years.  99.9% of all so called news agencies have been in the tank for all things Democrat for as long as I have been alive. Even Fox News which expends  so much effort giving time to stupid Progressives, just to show they are “Fair” and balanced  is rendered almost useless as a quote, unquote, “NEWS” service.  America is ill served by the joke that passes for media in this country and everything they report can be summed up rather simply. All things Democrat/Liberal good, all things Republican/Conservative BAD. That’s it in a nut shell.

Why, then, do 89% of Fox News employees self-identify as “liberal”?

The Big Three went 100%, 100% and 99%.  (Probably because of George Will.)

They can’t get big name liberals because:

    1.  They don’t want them.
    2.  Liberals don’t want to go on Fox because they know they’ll have to put together an actual argument instead of just engaging in the usual circle jerk that they do on the liberal outlets.

Democrats are NEVER to blame.  Everything is the fault of the last Republican president.  Haven’t you noticed that?  At least they’ve finally moved on from Reagan.  That poor old guy was causing problems for DECADES.

I don’t have time to watch news all day.  I spend my news watching time on outlets I feel are the most likely to be fair and balanced.  None of them REALLY are, but at least Fox isn’t as outrageously liberal as the others.

The Big Three are nothing more than liberal propaganda.  They are hilariously and outrageously biased.  When they start editing AUDIO in order to make someone sound like he’s the exact opposite of what he really is then that’s all I need to know.  Or when they Photoshop a picture of Trayvon Martin to make him look younger.  (The “hoodie” photo.)  Or only run a 5th grade photo of Martin and only run photos of Zimmerman in jail orange.  That’s called “propaganda”, and it’s an insult to my intelligence.

Dan Rather was, for years, considered to be THE elder statesman of “journalism”….until he got caught flagrantly lying.

Even Uncle Walter revealed himself to be a flaming left wing liberal in his later years.  Would have have had the respect that he enjoyed all those years on television if the Internet had existed back then?  We all believed him because there was no alternative voice to call B.S. on him.

Roger Ailes was media adviser for three GOP presidents. How can he possibly be objective?

He helped create Fox News to get revenge on the “liberal” media for simply doing its job and daring to expose the crimes of his beloved boss, Richard Nixon. Incredibly, some Americans bought into his far-right-leaning, race-baiting vision of journalism and now see FNC as “fair and balanced.”

If there was a sports channel that reported that your favorite team won every game, even if it didn’t, you’d watch that channel. That’s why Fox News appeals to the Right. In FNC’s eyes, Republicans are infallible and righteous, while Democrats are to blame for ALL of the country’s ills. It’s news where conservatives can cheer their heroes and boo the bad guys, as if news reporting is some type of WWE event.

Ever notice that FNC rarely gets anyone of note to debate them? They’re often reduced to talking to Sarah Palin, Jon Voight, Ted Nugent or Wayne Rogers. Or they simply debate each other. “Tonight on Bill O’ Reilly, my guest is. . .  MEGYN KELLY.”

Hopefully, Murdochgate will explode on US shores soon and make Fox News, like Father Coughlin of the 1930s, a distant, distasteful memory.

Journalism is a worthless major. People who become good journalists come from a variety of areas of knowledge – history, biology/medicine, physics/chemistry, economics, East Asian studies, law, engineering, computer science, art history, music, etc. – substantive study areas. Anyone can learn to write in journalistic format in a weekend – it is not a major. Journalism should not be an academic department by any stretch of reason – it is a presentation format with a tiny component of documentation and (supposedly) ethics. It would be maybe a weekend mini-course at most.

And you can’t dispute any of that…FoxNews gives radical Republican candidates a lucrative place to park and keep their visibility strong in between elections.  Gingrich, Santorum, Kasich, Huckabee, Palin (the last two were considering running this time again).  Other networks have political figures as hosts but they don’t turn around and run again in political campaigns.  That’s the difference.  Fox is not ‘fair and balanced’.  It is an arm of the conservative-corporatist wing of the Republican Party.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t say they were running simultaneously.  That’s your straw man argument.  I said:  ”FoxNews employed 2 of the four remaining Republican candidates.  Ailes met with Chris Christie to influence him to run for President.  FoxNews promoted Tea Party rallies telling viewers where and when they could join them and then had producers rouse the crowds before the cameras went on.  Ailes himself was a Republican operative before running FoxNews.  House Leader Gingrich recommended Hannity to Ailes for his startup at FoxNews.”

I have long contended that most columnists write for each other. George Will is a Moderate journalist passing as a conservative; I like his stuff, but while I can read eight volumes of Churchill without once consulting the dictionary I am unable to say that about one of Georges’ columns. David Brooks, a moderate journalist considered to be conservative only by the likes of Gail Collins, Dowd, Krugman and Washington of the Post is a good writer and always informative but unable to criticize anything the far left does.

One thing the writers fail to point out is that if you are Fair and Balanced, a condition few are able to maintain and get a passing grade at university, you surely will never work for the Gray Lady or the San Francisci Chronical.

Journalism is very subjective and to get along you have to go along. You have to genuflect at the altar of marx early or the profs will make your life miserable and drum you out.For hard sciences, they can’t make it up as you progress but they can still billy. But getting a Phd in social sciences demands that you get your ticket stamped as a marxist or the powers that be won’t sign off on it .Academic science today is political science pure and simple. Most legitimate and free scientific research in this country is being done in the private sector.

There is still lots of room for journalists who can write proper English. Stossel and Krauthammer are my favorites, and George Will comes close.

Most all the others can’t distinguish active/passive, indicative/subjunctive, transitive/intransitive in verbs, much less use them properly.

Ronald Reagan spoke better English than almost all of them, and he didn’t waste much time studying English or Journalism.

Well he’s right. The media is full of pissy whiny toucy feely lib-tards as it is. We don’t need more. We need people that will report the hypocrisy of KILLING THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE and claiming to be “FOR JOBS”. We need reporters that will report that an administration “Kills oil production by U.S. firms, while granting a big CONCESSION for BRAZIL and that the effect of this is WEALTH RE-DISTRIBUTION”.  We need journalists that will report not only on a Vice President that can’t SPELL POTATO but also on a Vice President who makes serially stupid boderline racist remarks, Indians in 7-11 anyone?  So if you’re a liberal POS on a soap box, save us all the bother and learn carpentry or something. Floral decorations is good, window treatments, that sort of half a queer thing!

Seriously, do you really need a four year degree in journalism? I never understood that. Especially now, in which newspapers are going out of business, why would you waste time and money on a buggy-whip industry degree? Ailes did the kids a big favor in telling the truth. It is true: if you’re trying to change the world, you’re not much of a journalist, but an advocate. Reading most reporters, that is the world of ‘journalism’. They gave away their one single asset years ago: their credibility.

I was in a Political Science class during the 2008 election year and the prof kept saying Palin was a bimbo and he praised Harvard law professor Obama.  He also disparaged the Founding Fathers as all white males pointing out the lack of diversity.

Journalism should have a new title, Propaganda 101.

No more journalists for change. We need journalists for the truth. What happened to hard -hitting exposure, peeling back the layers detective work. More John Stossel’s less perky millionaire’s at the Polo Club laughing it up with dirty politicians!

Thank God we can turn to the Internet to get other points of view. The MSM is just drivel written by the leftist activists that you refer to. Most kids majoring in Journalism today won’t make any money at it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5WAVWXS46SSKEDTF3CBZZAT6LY Mike

Then you don’t know squat about real journalism, as Ailes was alluding. As a former “journalism major” and former reporter who since has made a pretty good living with the written word, I find your statement full of pure ignorance. And, no, I am not a liberal or a Democrat by a freaking long shot.

Journalists vote democratic about 90% and 7% Republican.  It would be great to watch the gasping for air of the Left if close to half the media were planning to vote for Romney.

Ailes has done a great job of allowing the other side a little free speech.

Not to mention FOXNEWS ‘ Tony Snow who was press secretary (AGAIN) for the last Republican administration!   Its difficult to differentiate Mr. Ailes’ TV enterprise from a media wing of the Republican Party!  FoxNews gives Republican candidates a very profitable place to park before they re-enter the political sphere…

At least in doing so, there would be more integrity in their choice of majors. And that is because the vast majority of J schools are nothing but left-wing indoctrination houses that teach some writing skills on the side.

And, herein lies the problem we have with our terribly biased news media. These kids are young and impressional (a nicer way of stating the obvious, right?) and are ripe for the hard-core leftist brainwashing they receive. They aren’t taught critical thinking, how to do real investigative research or even to think for themselves.

Then, they graduate, get jobs in the MSM and follow-through dutifully with what they have been programmed to do — push leftist causes and policies, while demonizing Conservatives and Republicans.

Is there any wonder that a large percentage of Americans are clueless as to the real problems faced by our nation and how to solve those problems?

FoxNews hires Republicans who are still actively running in political races….I can’t think of one network that hired 2 of the leading Presidential candidates for one party, another former candidate who contemplated a second run for President (from the same party),  and a Governor (from the same party) BEFORE they ran for those offices…plus they pay the former VP candidate from the same party.
     Can you?

Fordson, I agree. Example: in political science class, we had to watch two Michael Moore films. One on his Cuba is better than us, and the other trying to take down the 2nd Adm. and NRA. After class, I would go to the computer room and get facts on mainly foreign health care to be ready for next class if I could talk. The 2nd Amendment I know. I did get a “A.” (the college was not bias–just the adjunct professor).

I cannot imagine a more shallow role to take up than that of “jounalism major’.

God,,,you so nailed it. The Streicher analogy is frighteningly accurate. Honesty of what we’re about, at least with Bush we knew what he was about, like it or not. The same with FOX. Presently, we don’t know if O is incompetent or lying. The left has the advantage of gripping our youth from the get go, i.e. education, news, Hollywood. In California colleges, we are required only one course in logic called critical thinking in which the book I had was littered with Rush Limbaugh examples of logical inconsistencies  What happened to logic and bias awareness? The professors know and rather prefer to apply it to their stalwart leftist agenda. No wonder I have visions of lemmings running off cliffs these days.

Last week, I did something you never see. I put an American flag bumper sticker on my Honda Civic. I am proud to be an American.

IIMPORTANT —->“Democracy depends on freedom of the press. But freedom depends on fairness in the press. There has to be more than one point of view.”
FUNNY —–> “We’re the only news organization who has not had layoffs because of economic conditions. Why? Because we win.”

I thought the easiest major was Community Organizer, there are only a couple of books to buy, Rules for Radicals, The Communist Manifesto and How to make the fools believe you.

  • Anonymous

Ditto Fordson. In addition, a journalism major is required to write, write, write to get a degree. If you don’t write from the profs leftward slant, you get Cs and no job, no letters of recommendation thereafter, or you change your major. You can always spot the award winners and top graduates in the class by their knee pads, brown noses and marshmellows for brains.

“When Politicans and the Press merge they’re no friend to the Public when they’re in Bed together!”
    Exactly…
FoxNews employed 2 of the four remaining Republican candidates.  Ailes met with Chris Christie to influence him to run for President.  FoxNews promoted Tea Party rallies telling viewers where and when they could join them and then had producers rouse the crowds before the cameras went on.  Ailes himself was a Republican operative before running FoxNews.  House Leader Gingrich recommended Hannity to Ailes for his startup at FoxNews.

That I could believe. I don’t watch TV any more.. any kind of TV. When I do watch the news-heads here on the net, I usually have to listen instead of watch, their nodding heads, flawless teeth and hair make me laugh too much… the other kind of journalist.. the hard-nosed reporter in the newsroom is as dead as door nails and cockroaches after I’m done with them. Newspapers aren’t worth buying for the pulp paper they are printed on and I don’t bother.

  • http://twitter.com/RileyRebel129 JP

No, Kevin has a point — although without context for the AIles quote, it’s hard to know if it’s the same one he was making when he suggets a change in majors.

Much the same way education majors have become the bane of our education system, J-schools and journalism/communications majors have seriously degraded the quality of US news reporting.

Why? Because journalism/communication programs teach PROCESS, not content. Being able to read a teleprompter or move naturally in front of a camera is a genuine skill (if you don’t think so, go outside and film yourself trying to report on something; watch the result). But increasingly, the products from these programs have no critical thinking skills or base of knowledge about any subjects. (I spent two years in the newsroom of a major news weekly, and the BIGGEST surprise to me was how genuinely ignorant of current events or recnt political history the reporting staff had. They knew no more about their subjects than any reader of the NYT or faithful watcher of CNN would know.)

As a result, we have a national news apparatus (FOX included) that spends the bulk of its time merely regurgitating each side’s talking points without challenging their veracity or repeating some other outlet’s reporting without breaking any stories of their own.

There is no longer any time to WASTE…

Liberal media hacks dont care about the truth, they care about impressing the other liberal media hacks.  Alot of these young journalists never had a chance to have an individual thought.  They have been indoctrinated with leftist marxist ideas since they began in government schools and it progessively gets worse through college.

On Fox News mole: “The mole shows a culture that believes in theft, a lack of loyalty, turning on his colleagues, lying to management, and there are some real, ethical, serious questions about it.”Succinctly put. The media culture of corruption that protected the President from nowhere, Obama, has been a tragic disgrace, and Americans reacted by canceling subscriptions and turning to other outlets for news with at least some objectivity. Fox is the only US news organization that has not had to fire staff for economic reasons.

Today’s journ-O-lists more resemble the ideology of Julius Streicher and his evil rag… Der Stuermer than a free and honest press.

The above would be OK… it really would… if they were honest about it, but they aren’t… which is insidious and has done tremendous harm to not only America, but the entire world, for we have followed the failed policies of Europe. Had we not, we could look at them, point our fingers and say… see… we told you so. Now we’re in the same boat without a paddle… hopefully 2012 will change that in drastic ways.

Thanks to FOX NEWS, the internet and talk radio.. we don’t have to take it anymore, and can begin (have begun) to roll back the idiocy.
