Huntsville Times’ press to run for last time Sunday night

Employees, retirees and their families have been invited to watch the presses roll for the last time at The Huntsville Times just after midnight on Sunday, according to a memo from the pressroom manager. After that, the newspaper will be printed at The Birmingham News, which also is owned by Advance Publications. Good tip from the pressroom manager but I’d totally wear white linen to this last rite and hope to get some ink on it. Then I’d keep it that way, not just as a souvenir, but to wear in protest of the demise of newsrooms all across the country.

For the Huntsville Times, at least a portion of the blame rests with the downsizing of NASA and its related contractors. That federal budget decline affected most areas of the South where the Space Program had developed. New Orleans’ Times-Picayune is another piece of collateral damage which NASA’s demise didn’t help, e.g. NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility.
