Daily Caller promotes gun giveaway next to story related to Colorado theater shooting

The Daily Caller is promoting its weekly gun giveaway in an ad placed next to a story related to the Colorado theater shooting. The headline for the story reads, “Tea party leader tells media to stop ‘false and reckless reporting’ after Batman shooting“; to the right is an ad that says, “Who should Romney select for VP? Click to enter The Daily Caller gun giveaway.”

The ad cycles through with a variety of others.

Jim Romenesko pointed out a similar issue on the Denver Post’s website, where a banner ad on the theater shooting story promoted a shotgun demo. The newspaper has taken down the ad.

    My Mom finally left the room, and I was able to locate it, or at least get close to it. It’s at the very beginning. I was asking how the gun lobby, the manufacture and the retail store could justify selling an assault rifle with six hundred hundred rounds of ammunition to a private, crazy citizen –  or something like that – it’s compressed now. Maybe the editor could assist you. 

    So she said something like, if a SUV had entered the theater and killed all those innocent people, if I would outlaw SUVs. I think. Well it’s close anyway. And I remarked that if SUVs were explicitly or implicitly designed to kill innocent folks, yes I would. (I know my Mom’s SUV would not kill any one. It’s pretty friendly. Mom wouldn’t allow it anyway.) ) So that’s the jest of it. So now you can see that I never bad mouthed SUVs. I never suggested they were explicitly designed to kill innocent people.

    Because as every one knows: SUVs don’t kill people, people do!

    Are you claiming  the American government would be kicking down my door if albaby2 wasn’t carrying a concealed weapon?  You arrogant snit! The French government was unable to defend it’s citizens because the French government had no guns, not the people.

     Why read a book about a constitution that no longer exists? Duh! My point was that 85% of American, adult citizens have failed to read a book during the last 12 months. And considering your inability to accurately read a sentence, written by someone other than your self, it seemed an obvious conclusion. That is what it has to do with our discussion. And no I’m not an intellectual. But considering that you don’t seem to have been able to understand most of what I have shared, I came to the conclusion that you lacked experience. Now we’re getting personal and that won’t solve a thing. I didn’t ask what books you had in your library; I asked what book you were reading. Try cracking the covers; you’ll get more out of it. O,O There I go again. Hope my Mom doesn’t read this. She says arguing with a red neck is a waste of time, especially one with a gun fetish. Here she comes; I better sign off. Lastly I am afraid of you, now that you mention it. But then you are the enemy. O, hi Mom, just catching up on current event….

    Steve, so you would act like  Frenchman and bend over when they kick down your door. Don’t you realize that’s why the government ISN”T kicking down your door?  You state the only enemy you fear is the government, yet you would disarm the citizens who would fight that government should it begin kicking down their doors?  The U.S. has fought on the behalf of many people whose government would not let them bear arms. What Am I reading now? Oh, lets see. My library contains The Constitution and the Bill of Rights, The Amateur, James Madison, The Road to Serfdom, Atlas Shrugged, The Bell Curve and many more, but what does that have to do with our discussion?  Are you trying to pretend to be an intellectual? If so, you are failing.

    Dear albaby2, the source of the information was Wikipedia. Good grief, is there no end to your madness? Where did I say that I believed that no one but the police or military ought to own guns. OK Now you’re concerning me. What ever you do, please stay out of all movie theaters until you are feeling better. Exactly when did I capitulate to the politicians? By the way when the editor places a red line under a word, he’s suggesting politely that something is amiss.

    The nation is drowning and you are describing the water. People carry guns for the same reason they hide behind religion: FEAR! What are you so afraid of?The police carry guns because they put themselves in harms way intentionally, while performing their jobs. I commend them. They aren’t perfect; no one is. That Florida pizza delivery driver had a gun. How’s that working out for him? Deader than a door nail, that’s how. The only enemy I fear is the government. Having a cocked and loaded weapon when they kick down your door is too late. The nation is on a downward spiral and all you can see is your own selfish fetishes. What book are you reading now? And the last one was?I rest my case.

    You haven’t explained yopur statement that guns are explicitly designed to kill innocent persons. Would like to know the source of that gem of a statement. Is that why cops carry them? That isn’t why I carry one.

    You have to compare other demographics of these other countries and their reporting requirements. If you want to discuss homicides per x number of people, you have to look at where the homicides are occuroing within the U.S. and the culktures of the people involved. No one except the military or law enforcementv should be allowed to purchase a semi-automatic assault weapon firing from a hundred round clip? First of all, it’s not called a clip by anyone except those without knowledge of weapons. It’s called a magazine. Second-the magazines vary in size and you don’t “purchase a semi-automatic assault weapon firing from a hundreed round clip-or magazine. I fear for people like yourself who beleive only the politically controlled military or police should be allowed to have weapons. You have already capitulated to the politicians. Last-for now-the U.S. has 14 times the gun ownership of england but only 13 times the homicides (using you figures) Please state the source of your information. It might help understand your position.

    I believe the fact that we Americans have 40 times as many guns as other countries is fear based. In France, for instance, there are only 31.2 guns per 100 residents vs our 88.8. The French government  fears it’s people, and they ought to, because they take to the streets at the drop of a dime. The memory of the “taking of the Bastille”, in 1789, is still fresh in their minds. Believe it or not.

    Our government fears us not. Why should they? Look whom we accept as  possible presidential candidates. Now I’m LOL! If a cocked and loaded assault weapon is your idea of a solution, then may I suggest that at that point it will be too late. Now is the rime to nip it in the bud. 

    The average American adult has not read a book within the last 12 months. That would be an excellent place to start and start we must!

    Of course, an AR-15 assault rifle is a semi-automatic weapon (one pull – one bullet) with a high-capacity magazine capable of firing 50-60 rounds per minute. OK You got me there. Although I knew, as most Americans know. But I had just viewed, for the first time, the picture of the cute, little, six-year-old girl eating an ice cream cone. And I was trying to imagine the deep, odious, horrible pain her family & neighbors were experiencing. I felt responsible, as you should. 

    In England, during 2009, there were 0.7 homicides per 100 residents with a gun ownership of 6.2 per 100 residents. While across the pond, the US experienced 6.2 homicides per 100 residents with a gun ownership of 88.8 guns per 100 residents.

    No one outside the military or law enforcement ought to be allowed to purchase a semi-automatic assault weapon firing from a hundred round clip. End of story!

    Cops carry guns for the same reason many citizens do. To protect themselves.. Next, do you know the difference between a “machine gun” and a semi-automatic weapon? Your post doesn’t reveal that you do. To purchase a machine gun requires a special federal permit. Bet you didn’t know that either.

    Does Steve Myers have a point? If so, what is it? Perhaps Steve should look at the violence that video games and movies promote. The Hollywood crowd is anti-gun but not when it can make them richer. They promote violence. The body count is just a collateral effect and of no importance.

    Your right!!  A lot more people die from drunk drivers and car accidents!!  Did you know that car accidents are the leading cause of injury and death in the law enforcement community!!

     Wow! How could these media sources possibly allow this?

    It’s kind of like a scion of journalism (Poynter) having Kochfacts.com advertisements appearing in all of  its Mediawire articles and being sponsored by them.

    And never critically covering any of the Koch brothers’ activities.

     There is a world of difference between a drunk driver killing people and a gunman deliberately gunning people down in a crowded theater — a clear case of false equivalence.

    Explain to me why an innocent contest — and firearms hobbyists who have committed no crime — should have to don sackcloth and ashes over the actions of a homicidal lunatic.

         If he had mowed down moviegoers with an SUV, would you be criticizing websites for running a SUV giveaway? If his home-made bomb had been sarin or mustard gas, would you call out BASF or Dow?

    I think before we start to take the “High Ground” as the above story trys to prove with questioning the advertising that might show up next to an article, you should look in the mirror!!  As of the time of this comment, a related link below this story is  ”ABC News speculates theater shooter James Holmes linked to Tea Party.”  ABC admitted this was false and apologized an hour ago!!!  Just saying that maybe in the future, you might want to not judge other sites when your is just as automated with links and such!!  Also, when reporting a story about a drunk driver killing people, do you remove all of your Car advertisements from the site??!!  Food for thought!!!
