Immigration officials didn’t ask for Vargas to be detained after arrest

Politico | Minneapolis Star Tribune
An official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told Politico reporter Katie Glueck the agency didn’t issue a notice to Minnesota police that it intended to take custody of activist journalist Jose Antonio Vargas after he was arrested for driving without a valid license Friday.

“Mr. Vargas was not arrested by ICE and no detainer was issued,” an unnamed official wrote Glueck in an email.

An immigration detainer is a notice issued from the Department of Homeland Security to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that tells them, “ICE intends to assume custody of an individual in [those agencies’] custody,” according to the ICE website.

Vargas drew the cops’ attention in the first place “for driving with headphones in his ears,” according to an account in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He was on his way to Carleton College for a speaking engagement, Minnesota State Patrol spokesperson Eric Roeske told the paper.

When the officer found that Vargas’ Washington license had been cancelled due to possible fraudulent activity, immigration officials were notified through the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The rental car he was driving was towed at the request of the rental company, Roeske said, and Vargas was booked around 10:50 a.m. into the Hennepin County jail. He was released about three hours later and later said via his Twitter page, “Thank you to everyone for your support. I am fine.”

Seattle Times reporter Lornet Turnbull reported last July that Vargas’ Washington state license was canceled not because he was in the country illegally but because he could not prove he lived in the state. His license was revoked one month after he revealed his undocumented status in an essay for The New York Times Magazine.

Kidnappers are not allowed to hold their hostages until their day in court. Why are criminal immigrants allowed to keep practicing their crimes? Illegal immigrants should have to await their day in court in their own country.

Send Vargas home and let him return only when his court case is called.

This parasite Vargas should have been deported a long time ago, but
instead the corrupt and despicable ObaMao regime is turning a blind eye
and this pendejo Jose is being treated like some sort of celebrity
instead of the criminal he is. The rule of law means nothing in this
nation anymore…. unless you are a citizen, that is.

Every time I see this Vargas asshole I see Comrade ObaMao flipping off every US citizen and legal resident in the country.

Vargas knows he can do what he wants with impunity. Vargas knew he rented that car with a revoked license, but that didn’t stop him any more than having to use fraudulent documents stopped him from acquiring it, unlawfully working, using the fraudulent license to fly on commercial flights. What would happen to citizens and lawful residents who committed these crimes? But the fix was in for Vargas before he publicly outed himself. Now he laughs all the way to the bank on the money he makes boo-hooing the plight of illegal aliens unlawfully present in the United States. His ego is so huge, he has undertaken a project (how much does he financially profit from it?) for illegal aliens to DEFINE AMERICA. What an insult to American citizens! The protection he receives from Obama and his executive branch blinds him to the understanding that HIS America – the lawless, lying, cheating, gimme-gimme America – is NOT the America that was founded on bedrock principles, including Rule of Law, the America that has endured for more than 200 years. Those who respect and obey the law know that all the negatives about which illegal aliens wail are not the fault of our laws and policies, but the sole fault of the those who violate the law. Like Vargas, they seem to think they should be immune from the consequences of their illicit acts. And Obama facilitates this lawlessness. American’s do not need to define America – we simply need to take it back and return it to lawfulness and prudence.
