‘Men of Journalism’ calendar a bold fundraising venture

Students of the SPJ chapter at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School are raising money via a bold, perhaps somewhat optimistic project: a “Men of Journalism” calendar.

“Most of the Cronkite School and the Downtown campus are female, so we wanted to capitalize on that market and create a calendar of men that hopefully the ladies of the Downtown campus will buy,” SPJ chapter president Anne Stegen told Alexis Macklin.

“I found out I was one of two freshman in the calendar, so that made me feel awesome,” Nick Wicksman told Macklin. He’s one of two calendar models whose identities SPJ has confirmed so far, and he’s the fellow featured in this video:

A Kickstarter campaign for the calendar has raised $414 of the $589 goal, which seems like a pretty impressive amount based on the subject matter. I haven’t been able to find too many other examples of people showcasing what male journalists look like, but the Asian American Journalists Association has done a Men of AAJA calendar as well as a DVD. And if you have your credit card handy right now, there will be a Men of Travel Blogging calendar next year.

Freshman students are hardly “men of journalism.” A tacky idea just as any other “Women of/men of calendars.

Wow, I really am old. I was ready to buy one thinking it would feature men like Walter Cronkite, Ernie Pyle, Woodward & Bernstein, Eddie Adams ….
