Cleveland TV station apologizes for reporting Charles Ramsey’s criminal record

WEWS-TV

On its Facebook page, WEWS-TV says “we made a poor judgment call in posting a story about Charles Ramsey’s criminal record and how he’s since reformed.”

While the story was factually sound, the timing of it and publication of such information was not in good taste, and we regret it. Your comments prompted us to quickly remove the story from our website and Facebook page, but we know we can’t erase what we’ve already done. Ramsey is a hero for his actions, and we recognize that. Thank you so much for your feedback.

Ramsey is a key figure in the story of how three missing women escaped captivity after 10 years. The Smoking Gun reported he was “once a repeat spousal abuser whose marriage ended in divorce following a 2003 felony conviction for battering his wife.” Also, as WEWS and others reported, another neighbor named Angel Cordero appears to have played as big a role as Ramsey in the women’s rescue. “Both stories reveal the dangers in lionizing someone at the heart of a breaking news event too soon,” Eric Deggans wrote in a piece published on Poynter Thursday.

I don’t care how factual it is or was, it never should have even been researched,” one commenter wrote on WEWS’ post.

We have made it easy to comment on posts, however we require civility and encourage full names to that end (first initial, last name is OK). Please read our guidelines here before commenting.

Why would anyone do this? The guy was an image for good in this world! why would anyone try to spoil that? and who authorized it? what kind of person would be like “ya, that’s importent information! lets write about how bad this guy is!” It’s not like this guy asked for all of this to happen- he is just a unique character who did one random act of kindness. So why try to pick on him?

    total B.S.

YEah no kidding so what Dan DeRoos means is that he should have turned his back if he didn’t want his criminal record to come out publicly

Let’s bring up America’s criminal record if anybody got a year to listen!

WOIO also reported Ramsey’s criminal history on May 8th. The reporter, Dan DeRoos said something along the lines of— ‘when you put yourself out there, this is what happens.’ How crass.

I could agree with that except for the fact that the media doesn’t seek and report ALL truths, they pick and choose what they want to report. I bet if it was a white guy who saved those girls we wouldn’t even hear about a criminal record. Even this article tries to diminish what Charles Ramsey did with this little snippet from another article…

” Also, as WEWS and others reported, another neighbor named Angel Cordero appears to have played as big a role as Ramsey in the women’s rescue. “Both stories reveal the dangers in lionizing someone at the heart of a breaking news event too soon.”

What the hell is that even supposed to mean? Lionizing someone too soon? He saved these girls from torture and bondage and returned them to their family after a DECADE, he deserves to be lionized.

Great report, Andrew. In my mind, what this case seems to reveal are the pratfalls of seeking ALL truths and reporting ALL of them, as discussed here: http://wp.me/p2jfzo-bV

Now these vampires have Feelings or it just because the public out cry was massive

Agreed, the damage is done. That was totally unnecessary to bring up his criminal history. Sad that they felt they needed to do that.
