Time magazine puts Angelina Jolie on its cover

Time | USA Today | CNN | The Daily Caller

Angelina Jolie will appear on the cover of Time’s new issue, out Friday, with a story by Alice Park and Jeffrey Kluger about how her revelation that she had a double mastectomy “puts genetic testing in the spotlight.”

The cover picture was taken before Jolie’s surgery, Time spokesperson Kerri Chyka tells Poynter.

Jolie sent her essay to The New York Times “through her contacts,” Times spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha told Poynter in an email, declining to go into further detail. “As a general rule, we do not discuss the editorial process for op-eds or traffic,” she wrote.

Amanda Hess, a former coworker of mine as well as an occasional Poynter.org contributor, appeared on CNN Tuesday to discuss her dismay that much of the coverage of Jolie’s op-ed focused on the actress’ breasts “instead of her life,” she told Jake Tapper. “And I think that even though Angelina Jolie is someone who has always been in the public eye, that sort of attention is something that every breast cancer survivor has to deal with.” Hess went into more detail on these thoughts in a blog post on Slate.

USA Today reporter Olivia Barker says she, too, had a double mastectomy and doesn’t consider the star brave for revealing what “should be, and hopefully soon will be, de rigueur” procedure, as she calls it:

Radical is going under the knife in hopes that a modified radical mastectomy reveals that your cancer hasn’t spread to scores of lymph nodes. It’s not broadcasting a surgery that’s more headache than hardship.

Jolie is also planning to have her ovaries removed, Michelle Tauber reports in People. Note to people repeating that news: That’s not the same procedure as a hysterectomy, as this Daily Caller correction shows:

The original version of this post stated incorrectly that Jolie would undergo a hysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of a woman’s uterus. People reports that she will have her ovaries removed, but not have a full hysterectomy. The Daily Caller regrets the error.
