Photographers stage cross-country Instagram battle

New York Times Lens Blog

While hanging together in New York, photographers Eric Thayer and Joshua Lott “started photographing in the same places with their smartphones and posting images on Instagram,” James Estrin writes. “That same day, a friend of theirs, Pierce Wright at Getty Images, suggested they turn it into a face-off.”

Here are their battle shots from a Chicago Fire game, posted Aug. 7:

They traveled to Chicago and Detroit, dueling all the way. “As they simultaneously posted photos, their friends and followers weighed in, commenting that this round went to ‘Team Thayer’ or to ‘Team Lott,’” Estrin writes. Both photographers do work for the Times, as well as for Reuters.

The rivalry did not appear to hinder professional courtesy: Thayer tells Estrin he once had to borrow Lott’s phone to take an image when his battery died.
