Former Reuters editor Chrystia Freeland won a primary Sunday and will face former Toronto Star columnist Linda McQuaig and former Star reporter John Deverell in a special election to represent a Toronto district in Canada’s parliament.
Freeland, who announced in late July she would leave Reuters to run for the seat, defeated two other candidates Sunday, Susan Delacourt and Susan Pigg report. McQuaig beat two people as well, including yet another former journalist, a TV reporter named Jennifer Hollett.
Freeland will represent the Liberal Party in the by-election to replace Liberal MP Bob Rae, which could be held as early as October. McQuaig will represent the New Democratic Party, or NDP, and Deverell will represent the Green Party. Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau recruited Freeland to run after being impressed with her book “Plutocrats,” Delacourt and Pigg write.
