Scott Stewart has returned to firefighting. Stewart was a Sun-Times photographer for 28 years before he, like the rest of the paper’s photo staff, lost his job in May. “I am a fireman who takes pictures,” he says.
The Merrionette Park, Ill., fire department called him to offer support after the layoffs, Stewart says, and he suggested they let him resume his previous occupation. He is a probationary firefighter and also works as the FD’s official photographer, WBBM’s Keith Johnson reports.
He also says he hopes to see his byline again: “Miracles do happen,” he tells Johnson. “Something could change.”
Before the layoffs, Stewart talked about how to shoot fires: “I want to bring our readers into the world of the firefighter, as best as I can with a camera,” he said.
