A large, Cold War-era globe will leave the Des Moines Register’s old lobby Wednesday, Kyle Munson writes. It’s headed for the State Historical Museum in Des Moines. The Register moved into a new building in June.
The Rand McNally-manufactured, hand-painted sphere is scheduled to move Wednesday morning down Locust Street. Methods & Materials Inc. of Chicago, the same firm that installed the popular alphabetical sculpture “Nomade” in downtown Des Moines’ Pappajohn Sculpture Park, will oversee the move.
A media event at 9 a.m. Wednesday will include the signing of the official “deed of gift” transferring ownership of the globe. Both Register Publisher Rick Green and Mary Cownie, director for the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, will be on hand to mark the occasion.
The globe hasn’t been updated in a while, Munson says in a video about the decoration. It still shows Germany as two countries, for instance.
