Washington Post carrier accused of stealing mail

D.C. Crime Stories

Washington Post carrier Robert E. Bell III “has been accused of stealing nearly $100,000 in mail from residents of a gated-community in northern Virginia,” Scott McCabe reports.

Inspectors installed a hidden camera at a condominium in the 15200 block of Royal Crest Drive. Within a week in August, the surveillance video captured Bell forcibly open a box full of keys used to unlock the mailboxes, charging papers said. Bell unlocked the mailboxes, and ripped open letters and took some of the… contents, documents said.

This blog has mostly highlighted accounts of newspaper carrier heroism. But this report of alleged malfeasance joins a recent story about men selling Times-Picayune subscriptions who police said got wasted and burned down a plantation as a reminder that not everyone involved in the distribution of newspapers may have your best interests at heart.
