Freelance cameraman working for AP in Egypt released on bail

The Associated Press reported Friday that Hassan Abdullah Hassan was released on bail in Egypt following an arrest Wednesday, but “the case remains open, authorities said.”

Hassan, a freelance cameraman and Egyptian citizen, was arrested after Egyptian police saw his footage on Al Jazeera and assumed he worked for that network, according to the AP.

Several journalists have been detained in recent months as part of a broader crackdown on what authorities say is biased coverage favoring ousted president Mohammed Morsi. Among them were three journalists jailed in December in Cairo while working for Al-Jazeera, arrests that have drawn criticism from numerous international journalist and news organizations.

In August of last year, Poynter wrote about journalists remaining in Egypt despite continuing attacks and detentions of foreign journalists.
