Washington City Paper, Buffalo News among finalists in newspaper design competition

A few U.S. papers are among the 29 finalists in the Society for News Design’s contest for the World’s Best-Designed Newspapers. Among them:

  • Washington City Paper, in the non-daily, circulation of 175,000 and over category (WCP Editor Mike Madden says the paper doesn’t print that many papers)
  • The Buffalo News, in the daily, circulation 75,000-174,999 category
  • USA Today, in the daily, circulation of 175,000 and over category

Washington City Paper, where I was once managing editor, usually only makes news for its design when it ticks people off (example, example). Kind of a nice change! City Paper already got an Award of Excellence from SND for its June 7, 2013, “Gay Issue.” Here are a few recent CP covers, courtesy Madden:
