Chat Replay: What Are the Most Important Issues Related to the Oil Spill in the Gulf?

The media have been covering the oil spill in the Gulf for nearly three months — telling us about the efforts to cap the well, the environmental and economic effects and who will pay for the damage. Even if BP manages to stop the flow soon, the story won’t go away; it will merely change.

On July 12, I conducted a live chat with four journalists about what they have focused on so far, what they think will be the most important issues in the coming weeks and months, and what news consumers should pay attention to. An active group of participants asked a lot of great questions, too, particularly about how difficult it has been to report this story.

These journalists are all based on the Gulf Coast and have been covering the effects of the oil in their backyard and miles away:

  • Mark Schleifstein, reporter for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans
  • Brian Schwaner, Louisiana news editor for the Associated Press
  • Karen Nelson, reporter for the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss.
  • Craig Pittman, reporter for Poynter’s St. Petersburg Times in St. Petersburg, Fla.
