Introducing the new Poynter.org: Learn about the site & tell us what you think

After months of strategizing, design and development, I’m proud to share the new Poynter.org with you.

If you are a longtime Poynter loyalist, I hope you will find the site easier to use, with the most relevant content easier to find. If you are new to us, I hope you will learn about us more easily.

Like The Poynter Institute, Poynter.org furthers journalism excellence.

Poynter has been a source of training for 35 years, and now it will be easier to access quick tips in our traditional teaching areas and in emerging areas: reporting & writing, engaging communities, developing business ideas, leading teams, and developing digital strategies.

Of course, we continue to publish Romenesko’s industry news, now combined with our new Mobile Media and Social Media blogs, along with partner feeds from some of the best websites covering news. And you can always count on us to cover the business and help you make sense of news and how it spreads.

    Comfort and familiarity aside, I still like the old site far better. You’ve taken basically the same content and made it less compelling to click. I want to navigate away for more often than I want to proceed.

    I wanted to see if anyone bothered to answer any of my questions. There is no way to find this article now that it isn’t linked on the front page. I had to go through my history to find the link back here. Since the whole purpose of this redesign was to make it easier to find things – how does one find this article once it’s not on the front page?

    also, why are you lumping in Romenesko with other blogs? he has great industry news, which i really do not equate with blogs about social media, valuable though they may be. And I see there’s now a woman on the home page, but I still think you need to work on the diversity thing. Mainly, though, what is the Poynter mission? the design should serve the mission and not be a conglomeration of online trends.

    first of all, why are you making me login to yet another social media site, or use my own personal facebook, to leave a comment? as for the new site, have you noticed that every single person on the homepage is a middle-aged white male? that’s not really a good representation of the industry. the design itself is not attractive, lots of headlines and links with nothing to actually READ. i know the media landscape is changing, etc etc, but sheesh…this is supposed to be about promoting high-quality reporting, right?

    I gave it another look and it’s sad fail. How do I get to the Visual Journalism section? Poynter doesn’t do anything new in that area, but what about the valuable old content? How do I get to *any* of the old content? Where are the NPPA galleries? Where do I log in? How do I manage email subscriptions? Who stacked two navigation bars on top of each other? Why with different fonts? Why is that logo in too much whitespace and underneath a different version of the same logo?

    Where’s the real journalism content? I see a lot of sell this and sell that, apply for this and that, NewsU discounts, a plea for money. There’s tweets and flash in the pan chats I never see in time, classified ads. There’s FB thumbs up trolling and a gift store, more ads and another plea for money.

    Where are the stories about journalism? Where is the thoughtful exploration of the ethics behind Wikileaks issues? Where is the typography, photography, infographic and design content? Where are examples or best tips for multimedia production? Is excellent journalism just blog posts and tweets nowdays?

    Don’t mess with my Romenesko. I complained about the last redo and was told to relax, it happens only every century or so. I eventually adapted to the new look and cadence, and I began to see it as unique and original. But this? Time will not heal.

    Well, Romensko look better, easier to navigate.
    But then I am using Lynx text browser ( no silly adverts or pictures for me, words above all) in the blind settings ( Blynx http://leb.net/blinus/blynx ) so I “see” things differently than others.

    But why yet another registry scheme called Disqus, and many of us avoid signing on to SlamBook for any reason.

    Surely you can use an email verification device or some such scheme.

    Are you trying to make to boost the rest of the site by burying Romenesko in it? You risk becoming less “Must read.” He’s your draw. Make his stuff center stage, and the other links secondary, etc. The way it WAS, in other words. The rest of the site is people who haven’t been in the media for years offering dated advice to those of us still hanging on.

    I like it overall. It’s much cleaner and makes much better use of the screen space, especially on the front page. My only complaints are the double sidebars on the article pages, which I mentioned in my Romenesko comment, and the front page maybe could have a bit more of a skeleton to it, the content is kind of floating with no guides around it.

    I love the new design. So many advantages to it and great improvements on usability! Kudos.
    As far as the complainers go: Simple is better! With the advancement of technology the looks of websites change as well. Get used to it, people! At least you can easily use the site on your mobile phone now!

    Generic-looking, headline-heavy, overly packaged. (There’s a reason people like Twitter.) You gave up a distinctive look (people across the room could see I was reading Romenesko) for something that looks like a Drupal package. This goes to the whole puzzle of mobile (web, iPad) newspaper design. I’m not sure what the answer is, but it’s not mimicking Amazon.

    I’m sitting here vigorously shaking my head side to side indicating my dislike for the new design. But then again that’s a natural reaction to changes in a site that’s been an almost daily stop for years.
    My single biggest complaint was reflected in a column I read yesterday (that I cannot now locate, of course) outlining the five biggest mistakes made in news — and I think in many respects poynter.org is a news site for the industry. One of the mistakes was making the home page link heavy with nothing to read…nothing to draw in a visitor. Will that ‘mistake’ haunt this new design?
    Only time will tell how well the new design is accepted. As for me, there will be a period of gnashing of teeth and perhaps frustration in the inability to locate a particular page. Adaptation will follow and all will again be right with the world.

    Thanks for the feedback. Dense is right; We often heard complaints that the old site was cluttered, unfocused and difficult to read. This redesign was accomplished, in part, to address those complaints.

    For the 10+ years that Jim and his blog have been a part of Poynter, his readers have expressed concerns that the Institute aspired to transform Romenesko into something else. This redesign actually does quite the opposite. We’ve created more news content inspired by Romenesko. Blogs like Mobile Media and sections like the new Media Lab follow Jim’s lead into curation, aggregation and quick highlights. And they appear in the same section as Romenesko (Latest News) because together these blogs explore journalism’s future as it unfolds.

    We don’t want to stuff Jim — we want to clone him!

    You’ve taken a column dense with readability and personality made it sterile and generic-looking. (Have you seen the documentary “Helvetica?”) And, are the educators and foundation types at Poynter so intimidated by the Romeneko column’s popularity that they think screaming POYNTER at the visitor is going to divert more of us to the J-school departments of the site? I appreciate Poynter’s contributions but Romenesko is your drawing card. Don’t stuff him.

    I don’t like it … so far. The old Romenesko format seemed easier to navigate and easier (on the eyes) to read. I’ll probably get used to it. After all, where else will I get this compendium of industry news?
